Default Fuel Pump Noise?

On my drive to work this morning a small buzz/whine started from the rear of the car. I dimly remember reading about noise from the fuel pump. Does the noise mean it's starting to fail or is it something I can live with for awhile. By the way, my tank was on empty when I first heard the noise. I'll see if it goes away when I fill it up. Thanks for any help.

It's one of those sounds that once your ears tune into it, you will never stop hearing it

If I turn my key and do not hear my fuel pump, I get worried.

Yes an empty tank amplifies the noise and in many cases a sudden increase or onset of noise could be the sign of a pump waving good buy.....

So long story short, if it's the original pump installed in 1989, might be a good idea to replace it and the filter anyway

^^ agreed. i would start getting the wheels in motion to replace that bugger and the filter. mine made HORRIFIC noise for 2 years, and kept going, but not a day would go by that i would not think about replacing it.....
