Default Tempted ... interested in folks' thoughts

There's an early (79) 928 nearby that's for sale. The interior needs refreshing (seats + carpet) and the current owner states that there are 2nd gear issues. I know TB + WP will need updating

My question for the assembled wisdom: how frightened would you be of the gearbox issues. And what would you offer?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts -

Seats and carpet are no big deal, $1500 to replace. That leads to other things that previously seemed like no big deal to stand out. Dash, console, pod, headliner, rear qtrs. Ask me how I know. With a 79 the TB WP would be pretty far down the list, just MYHO. I would investigate the 2nd gear issue further. What type of issues?? When was last trans fluid change? What type of fluid? Could be no big deal, again, just an opinion. How is the paint? Does it look like it has been cared for?

Depending on mileage and service history I would be anywhere from $1500 to $3500. Plan on spending twice the purchase price in the first year of ownership.

Thanks, Brian for the insights.

I haven't yet seen the car in person, and one phone conversation leads me to assume the worst in terms of maintenance and the transmission issue.

I like your optimism re: seats & carpet -- my mind went straight to your conclusion (had the same problem in my 944... once you get started on an interior ...)

I'll admit, I'm curious about the transmission: best the PO could do was "car has been sitting since I thought the transmission was acting funny"

Happy to hear others' thoughts - anyone have/had a balky transmission on an older (78-80) 928, with or without a simple fix?

By transmission I presume 5 sp, they are dead simple to work on once you've got it out.

Thanks Roy and Tony -- looks like it's time for me to go check the car out! (And, yes, it's a 5sp)
