Default oil pool

I plan to do an intake refresh as a winter project, but while doing the TB/WP i noticed a pool of oil (pics). I'm pretty sure no coolant came out when i removed the upper rad hose, so i think it's all or mostly oil. Where is it coming from and is the fix pretty straight forward?

more that likely from the oil fill neck, where it bolts to the block

You have the plastic oil fill neck which is notorious for leaking at its base. Being plastic it can become distorted and fail to seal effectively. They are made from three separate pieces so It could also be leaking from the join seams on the neck itself. Its a disappointing design and not consistent with Porsche quality. The S3 has a nice alloy neck which would be a worthwhile swap if you can get your hands on one.

Any idea where i can get the S3 metal one (will it fit the S4?) or is there another aftermarket alternative?

As long as the plastic one is not cracked, when replacing it use a bead of silicone sealant one that is good for oil and heat.
The filler neck is only held on by two long 10mm bolts that can not be torqued down too much else you will break something, hence the need for the sealant.
Yes the S3 part will fit, that is why it was suggested, but they will leak too if not sealed the same way.

My '86.5 had the same problem kaelix. For some unknown reason a previous owner had changed the original fill neck for one from an '87 (or newer). This pos had split along the seam and continually filled the area just behind. Also if not done recently expect to change some of the hoses as they will be hard.

I took the opportunity to also install an oil baffle from 928 Intl during my intake R&R. Tom can source the right gaskets as well. I used Yamabond sealant, pre S4 gasket, baffle, S4 o-ring gasket with silicone lube. No leaks going on a year. Well documented...search is your friend.

Also a good opportunity to change the large o-ring on the coolant bridge, that recess in your picture probably also holds leaked out coolant. Then of course also change out all other coolant bridge seals.

for the sealant to use on the oil fill tube,
I suggest Hondabond 4 ,
this is found at your local Honda bike dealer.

NOTE 928 INTL sells a oil fill tube block off plate,
this will reduce the amount of oil that is thrown at the oil fill tube

All good info ... the metal S3 may also have a different breather hose configuration and so you may need to make some modifications to either close off or add another connection point.

I put a new plastic one on my car a few years back and wish now I had found (and modified) a metal one instead
