Default '89 S4 manual trans car for sale -Tentatively SOLD

First person to look at this car in person and drive it a short distance committed to buy it within a couple of hours. Great news for me in that the 'system' remains in tact, and he will be attending PCA Driver Ed events in our area with the car.

Many thanks to all for the nice comments you made. I'm sure the new owner will pop up here some time, as he is already a Rennlist reader.

I'm kind of re-posting this slightly modified ad, as I want to be sure everyone who MIGHT be interested in this as a dual purpose car - street driving as well as good performing track car has an opportunity to really consider it. As stated previously, I am open to reasonable offers, as I'd really like to see this car continue to get the 'correct exercise' an excellent condition 928 deserves - which it can never demonstrate SAFELY on US streets and highways - in my opinion, having driven in PCA Drivers Ed events for ~10 years.

IF there is no serious interest within about 2 1/2 weeks, I will start the process of returning it to street condition by re-installing the original seats, steering wheel, wheels/tires, sway bars, etc. etc. The many upgrade 'goodies' on it will cost far more to replace than they would if bought as a package. I also have interest in just the trailer and some tools, so that would be sold separately as well.

Think about it guys and gals - this dual purpose opportunity doesn't come up very often
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the chronological calendar now says I'm past 3/4 of a century, I have concluded that I should find another hobby to replace the track driving via PCA's Drivers' Education program I've been doing for the past ~10 years. Time creeps up on you, and it is best if you find this WONDERFUL experience earlier in life. I did not discover it until after retirement, but it is a wonderful exillerating experience that I highly recommend any 928 owner seriously consider.

So - the car is for sale. It is a black/champagne '89 5 speed. These, like the '89 GT's are very rare - each is more rare than the '93 GTS, and perhaps more rare than the '94 GTS as well. It has the very desirable 2.64 rear axle.

The car had ~113K miles when I bought it in late 2005. It now has ~134K miles. I'm the 3rd private owner, had a clean CarFax when I bought it, and still does. Original owner in upstate NY for 3 years, then to OK with a relocation of that ower to AR. I bought it from a used car dealer in AR who had been driving it for a while.

Upon purchase, Earl G and I promptly replaced all the rubber/plastic stuff in the engine compartment, new everything in the front of the engine (knock sensors, T belt and all the gears it contacts, water pump, etc). Powder coated intake and manifold in silver. I replaced all fluids, using synthetic oil/greases. Went through all the electrical systems similarly. It is and has been my drive to, on, and from track car since the summer of 2006. As such, I wanted everything up to snuff mechanically. In 6+ years of usage, at about 10 days of DE's per year, there has never been one single mechanical or electrical issue. Timing belt (Gates) and pump (Lasko) were redone in Nov.2011 after ~15K and 5 years. Only Mobil 1 15W50 used since I've owned it, and it receives thorough annual maintenance in my hobby garage one the lift every winter. Uses no oil going to and from the track, but does use/burn about 1 qt per 125-150 miles at the track. The motor mounts were replaced in 2006, and are still good, and the steering rack was replaced this winter.

This car 'knows' tracks from Mont Tremblant to VIR, and Lime Rock to Road America!

Quick summary of modifications include: Recaro SRD adjustable back black racing seats (black), 5 point harness (2010 dates), harness bar across between rear shock towers, Lizard shifter, Koni externally adjustable shocks/Eibach springs, Porsche CDR-220 radio with either a CD changer, or I-pod connector (buyer's option), 928 Specialists X pipe, RMB, 928 Specialists hvy duty sway bar front, Louis Ott links on rear, Two sets of Porsche OE hollow spoke 18" wheels 8"F, 10" R each with nearly new tires (Pilot Cups on one set) (one set of 993 and one set of 996). Fender lips rolled, rear fenders flared ~3/4", adapters for using GTS front rotors with the OE S4 calipers, rear calipers have been changed to 993 model, which have 20+% greater piston area, Brake bias valve is now 45 bar, vs OE 18 abar. It has a Porsche 930 steering wheel. Delrin rack bushings and new boots. The LH also has a chip, the primary benefit is raising the ignition limit to 6800. I never exceeded 6400 rpm, and never had the engine above 5,000 in a turn. The higher ignition limit allows the driver to modulate without the engine sputtering on short stretches where up-shifting is non- productive (e.g. 4th to 5th at 130+ mph where the braking zone is 300 feet away). My objective in track driving never was to be the fastest, but to learn high performance driving, be smooth and uniform, and preserve my equipment. Oil pressure is always above 2 bar at idle, and is at 5 bar at 2100 rpm when at full operating temperature. Engine temperature never reached the red mark even on hottest days at the track - usually at or slightly above the last white marker.. Perhaps there may be a few other minor items I've forgotten! All four brake calipers were rebuilt 2 years ago with new seals, dust boots, and re-finished with 2 component epoxy paint. Still look nearly new after 2 years of driving, including 7-8 days a year on tracks.

Exterior appearance is excellent. During track tech inspections I nearly always get comments about how great the car looks, and how nice it is that there are 928's participating. I think this car gets more attention at a track event than a GT3!!!! Interior is probably a 5-6 (probably better, I just rate interiors harshly!). Everything is there, the rear seats are good, the OE seats are good (driver bolster not a problem, but there are cracks in the dash/pod. AC is still R-12, and works well. Holds charge for at least 2 years.

I also purchased and equipped a small trailer to pull behind the car with the spare set of tires. It has a custom built aluminum tool box for jack, spare hoses, belts, fluids, brake pads, etc., as well as other tools, wrenches etc. Removable tow hitch and fold down license plate, as well as wiring for trailer lights installed.

I asked a long time track associate who drove a '91 GT for many years what the value of the package is. His response was high teens, maybe 20. I want to make this an attractive package for someone who wants to use it the way I have used it. Thus, I wish to sell it as a package. To make it attractive, I priced the package at $15,000 to a fellow Rennlister/928 Owners Club member who wanted to buy it (we shared a couple of days together at Watkins Glen last week). Unfortunately, family situation at the present time precluded his purchase. IF sold as a package, several spare rotors, track pads, and other stuff will be included.

So - I'll make my new price $14KK, and I'll 'consider' reasonable offers. IF no one wants to consider the full package, I WILL consider selling just the car, as is, or eventually returned to street components.

To see comments from other 928 owners who have seen and know the car - or have known me for several years made after the original listing, search for this title, and open the one on the 928 Forum page: For Sale - '89 928 5 speed dual usage?

Many more pictures are available - send me a direct e-mail with what you'd like to see, and I'll respond with the pix. Address is:

Gary,

I bought a track car this evening locally, literally 30 minutes from my house, and it has the same wheels as your track car, also without center caps. You say they are "Porsche OE", what car did these wheels come on originally?

The car I bought is a silver 88 auto with all sorts of modifications underneath, and a rear rollbar. I'll post some pictures after I get it on the lift and you can help me figure out what I have since I know nothing about track 928s.

GLWS! Beautiful car.

Don,

Those wheels came in both solid spoke on the 996 NA and Boxsters. The 996 Turbos had hollow spoke wheels, which are about 4 lbs or so lighter (much better for at least the front wheels, where you want to reduce the gyroscope effect of weight spinning at high speed).

Solid spoke wheels have a center ridge and two grooves on the back sides of the spokes. The hollow spokes have a solid, slightly rounded back side and steel screw in valve stems.

Glad to comment on questions. One aspect regards the roll bar. Actually, the body of the 928 is SO rigid that the roll bar is probably useless - maybe even a disadvantage due to weight. The bottoms are usually mounted to just the sheet metal, which is NOT a support in case the roof were to collapse. Remember the movie stunt where they tried to collapse a 928 by running a monster truck over it, and it wouldn't collapse? Had to cut portions of the B pillar to make it happen. Just an example of the strength and integrity of the 928 chassis.

Cheers,

Gary-

I am posting a kidney on Craiglist right now. I will be in touch if it sells. This would be a great car for me to get back into the 928 world.

Thanks Brett, but for your long term future health, I hope it DOES NOT sell!!

Thanks again also for the seats you sold me. They were integrated with some other seats, and a set of supple leather upholstery, so at least parts of them are now in my '94 GTS. They are now shown in my new avatar, replacing the silver grey/black piping seats I removed.

Gary--

I didn't say it way MY kidney. :-)

I am glad you put the seats to good use. It has been great seeing those parts in use on so many other cars.

Gary,

I picked up the track car today and learned from the owner that the wheels on it are the actual wheels from Carl's Pike's Peak car! No wonder they are so scratched up...

Don,

Then my guess is that they are actually hollow spokes. Refinishing - if you want them pristine shouldn't be any problem. Good buy!

As I posted in the Classifieds:

Great Shark Gary, GLWS! You have me seriously considering selling my '85 that I've been slowly getting more DE worthy & getting your '89. Just all the time involved in selling & buying right now that I don't really have before yours is gone!

I'd encourage you to give it a bit more time before you start changing it back to street only. Surely someone will want this already track ready. I know I do!!

Thanks Michael and Mel for the feedback. I too am a bit surprised that no one has come forth with a firm decision yet. Several are at least 'kicking tires', but no decision. Had two 928 owners who WANTED badly to buy it as is, but their family situations prevent it from happening.

Do have a couple interested in the 'street car' aspect only. SO - I'm starting to lean that way!!
IF I do reverse the mods, there will be some 'go faster' stuff for sale, as well as the trailer etc.

As a "track" guy I appreciate the work-effort-expense to make this a very nice drive to the track and have fun car..... However the market for these vehicles is quite small

I concur with the "back to full street" sale.....then you can sell off the trailer, recaro seats extra wheels and so on....

I WISH I was in the market for a street 928, as I would be ALL OVER yours as a street car....especially sinces its an 89S4 with the euro trans.... Damm race car is sucking up ALL my $$$$
