Possible Project Car.....suggestions?
Im new to the Porsche scene, and was just given this lil lady for free as a project car. Hasn't been run in 15 years, just gathering dust all by her lonesome down in California. I figured she'd be worth towing back up to Montana. Suggestions on where to start with this gal?
If its an auto, it needs to have all 4 wheels up on a trailer for towing - a dolly will fry the transmission.
As to whether its worth it - be mindful that pretty much all 928's that have been sitting (and most that still drive) need $5k in mechanical parts. If this is your first Porsche, you may not appreciate how all the little parts add up *fast*.
Sure, some of the big parts are expensive.. but even most of the little parts are in the $50-100 range, and a project you've budgeted for can easily blow out by double or more. The flip side is that, once running well, these cars put a big smile on your face, and give you a huge appreciation for the brand.
Now.. like Jim says above, if you want a fair idea of what to expect based on people here's actual experience, model year, and some pics of the engine bay, exterior and interior are needed. Plus we all like to look at 928's

Would you be willing to pay 10K for that car as a running driving car ?? If not you should probably avoid the "free" car......If as a hobby and you have always wanted a 928 have fun however do not think it is going to be a money maker unless you get really lucky....
Hilton is not kidding about the money you will spend. I started 3 months ago with a super solid 80K 1982 5 speed with new paint, new AC system, new fuel system and most of the needed parts already replaced and I STILL spent $7500. Thank goodness the motor is ok. Of course some of those parts are cosmetic, but I did need rebuild the 5 speed and replace the clutch. So DO NOT get p*ssed or dejected when you start adding up the costs, you have been friendly warned. Set a budget, do the absolutely necessary items first, that is safety items and then tackle the nice to do stuff. Try to double up on work time. That is, if the steering rack is out, then replace motor mounts, oil pan gasket, sway bar bushings, tie rods, etc, etc, etc. DO NOT buy 928 parts off of ebay or some generic parts.com site! I bought a steering rack for a few $ cheaper that was completely misclocked that cost me a ton of extra time to make right. Buy from Roger or Mark and you know the parts are right and at a good price. This my second 928 that I have almost completely redone and it gets frustrating at times, but think of how cool your car will be when done, or almost done. It never gets completely done, that is the fun of it! So unless you have access to a bunch of Overhaulin' type guys who will help you out, it WILL be a long and potentially expensive road to get this free 928 running, but it will be very rewarding. Just my 2 cents from someone who reentered the shark tank a few months ago.
