Default bell housing cover removal last two bolts

Hello, I am removing my bell housing cover so I can measure the diameter of my torque tube. Does any know how to remove the last two bolts? They are the bolts on each side that are closest to the back of the car. I hate to remove the exhaust to get to them. I almost have one off but their has to be a faster way of doing it.

Most times you do have to remove the exhaust. Now's a good time to get an X-pipe from 928sRus and you won't have that problem again.

FML, those nuts/bolts look like the ones you see on the picture of penetrating oil cans.

You can wrestle with it like you've done for bolt #1 or release the exhaust a little. No other way. I've left these two bolts off so I can access for flexplate measurements with ease.

X-pipe is good idea; You can get away with just dropping the pipes 2 inches where it connects w/header; I think you have to remove both heat shields too.

Harder: you may be able to back the bolts out til they are against the pipe(s). Then cut them off with hack saw (you can get a $5 tool for hand grip on blade from Harbor) leaving a nub with which to grab and twist out the stub. Clean the threads on the remainder of bolt and re-insert when done. Some just chuck those 2 bolts. YMMV.

It's true you only need to drop exhaust couple if inches (keep eye on O2 sensor wires), but those bolts where it connects to header will be rusty so use penetrant on them.

I cut the bolts down after first taking them out, but now I just leave them off altogether and removing for annual flexplate check is as easy as on non-cat 928. You have reminded me to put grommets in the empty bolt holes just to keep things clean.

Good idea.
Will add to my list.

Alright here is what I did. I first jacked up the vehicle and put it on two stands. Then I removed the first 4 bolts very easily with a 13mm socket (i am glad i bought another one yesterday at the store my friend lost the 13mm socket i let him borrow). Then I turned the other two bolts as far as I could left. I then used a Gerber multi-purpose knife wrench to turn it by the threads as far as I could. I then removed the 3 bolts on both exhaust pipes and shook it a little and the cover and two bolts fell off. I am not sure if I should take off the entire exhaust to make it easier for the transmission re builder to remove my transmission.

Not really necessary to do. It's just a nut & bolt thing, and not a sophisticated, and delicate, 928 task.

About this x-pipe, does it go in between the exhaust manifold and the cats? Or does it replace the cats? I lowered my car already and can't remember the pipes that connected to the exhaust manifold were removable before the cats.

If you leave those two bolts out, which I do, foam ear plugs make a great way to keep the threaded holes clean. I put mine in several years ago and they are almost intact.

The X-pipe goes between the manifold and either replaces the cats or comes with replacement cats (depending on which option you choose). Either way you usually ditch the old cats.

I shortened (by 5mm) the two rear cover bolts when I first did my thrust bearing check. Made it a lot easier on subsequent ones. Have not done a check since I put the x-pipe on.

Have a car with no "cats" then no problems with removal of bolts-simple.

How about milling down the two bosses
under cats and use shorter bolts?

I have five different 17mm wrenches and 3 different 13mm. Just take it apart slow and keep going, you aren't saving time skipping bolts.
