Yea, I try and tell folks but they never listen... Pay up front for a REALLY GOOD CAR and pay serious money for the serious cars and don't look back. One friend actually listened to my advice and he is having a 2nd 928 love affair because of it. Sure he had to do torque converter bearings but who knew, they were silent when the car arrived and he had to do the requisite T-belt a bit over a year later, but he has one of the nicest S4's around! He paid high price for it, but the local guy who bought a basket case S4 (same color btw) will NEVER have as nice a car no matter HOW MUCH he spends! Ok, he could repaint the whole thing and put a new interior in it and btw, fix the blown head gasket, but then he will be in it for $30k and it probably will still barely be as nice as the car that was slightly more than half that money! Buy a good car up front fellas and pay good money for it! Unless of course you are super mechanic, great paint/body guy and can do your own upholstery work!

well, my .02. I paid 1/3 the price for mine, same year and interior. I now have close to 8k invested and mine is not near as nice yet.(by the picks), my car had 4 PO's and only have limited records from the last one. He may have close to a 15K 928 with just a little more investment in the need to do's.
btw, I noticed the rear pass/side speaker grill is smashed in, and the rear console lock looks boogered up.

.............I mentioned the 'burgundy interior may be harder to get full dollar' thing to him too, and I'm not always been the biggest fan of burgundy, but I've got to say that this combo in this particular car does look pretty awesome. I'm having him verify the original paint as I haven't seen any black on burgundy before (and that should be done anyway), but it's really pretty sharp looking...........
No offense taken on anyone's opinions on colors or color combinations. We all like what we like......I happen to love the Black/Burgundy combo.....So do a lot of people that I talk to....

BTW, that car looks awesome and I hope it checks out as well as the E-bay listing states and shows. A $15,000 85 is a good thing for all of us!

Burgundy interior, maybe some pity votes? (joking really)
IMHO not a popular interior choice, but interior choice need only please the owner.
I read the first post as "could not afford", I have no issue with taxing the rich for acting impulsively, let the dollars flow freely.
Dealer PPI I would not put a lot of value on, but dealer might find it amusing to see a 928.

I'm sorry, but when I bid on an ebay item, I either accept the information on its face or I choose to verify it or not, PRESALE. You can say that it's OK to ignore your purchase responsiblity, but I say that is BS, short of CRIMINAL misrepresentation. It's not OK to reduce your price to match your expectation after the fact. Caveat emptor applies. The OP made the offer, he chose to not investigate further. It should be his car. What happened to honoring your word? Nobody could ever sell a car, if the buyer could nitpick any problem he found in a 28 year old car.
Really.
Good luck,
Dave

Price is often a relative thing. What I might pay for an item someone else might consider it overpriced or a bargain. Whichever way you want to consider this it comes down to personal choice and especially with these cars. Also when purchasing anything at auction (eBay or other) caveat emptor (Buyer Beware). One should do as much due dilligence as is appropriate to the purchase.I haven't seen the car however I would suggest your friend do:
1. A PPI with a reputable service shop that knows the Porsche 928 product;
2. Get a local/in area Landsharker to eyeball the car and report back;
3. If the car is not as described either negotiate down or walk away;
4. If everything checks out OK then fly in and enjoy the drive home.
In Australia fellow Landsharkers will often say that irrespective of the rice you are buying a $50,000 car. It all depends on your initial price and after purchase spend. Something closer to that figure that clearly should have all the appropriate services, maintenance and well cared for should typically translate into a dependable, reliable daily driver and a bloody nice car. Price will often determine how much of a project car you end up with. If you want less project and more daily driver then be prepared to pay a bit more.
There is a lot of resource and experience in this group and strongly recommend your friend join and tap into the wealth of experience.
At the end of the day if your friend likes the car and is not unhappy about the price then I sincerely welcome him to 928 ownership and the ensuing love affair with this model.
Cheers

Hey guys,
A close friend of mine who is new to Porsches and 928s sort of fell for this '85 S3 on ebay that was originally at a current price of $6,555 when he started tracking it. I told him it looked okay for that price but that it wasnt' my favorite out of the cars he was considering. Anyway, he bid up (likely fake bidding war with broker imo) and "won" the auction at $15,000. He can afford this, but doesn't know much about 928 market values and would need it to be basically a near perfect car that he could use as a daily driver and that would hopefully at least hold its value.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...EF:MOTORS:1123
It's being sold by a 'broker' by the owner. Broker told my friend that the car was basically perfect and road trip worthy. My friend got tickets for he and another friend who's into vintage bimmers to fly half way across the country and drive it back to the east coast... tomorrow. My friend then asked for more verification of the service history and found that the last service performed was in 2011 and that the car has 4k miles on it since then, and was never brought back in by owner to have the timing belt re-tensioned after 1k miles. Also, he doesn't know anything more about the car that is presented in the 14 camera-phone quality pictures on the ebay auction. No PPI, no VIN check, numbers verification, options or paint verification etc.
I told my friend that I wouldn't do it. That he should RUN based on the limited data he has on this car, especially for that price. If it were more local and he had gotten it for closer to the $6555 it started at I would say good luck and have fun.
So, I've seen you guys eye-ball cars and see all kinds of red flags in the past. What do you think of this car, and is it worth the price and would you deem it likely to be road trip worthy?
Thanks and any insight and advice is much appreciated. Just looking out for my friend who's a great guy. Advice appreciated either way, even if its completely different direction than i've urged him (hope i didn't screw up a good car for him...) I'll direct my friend to this thread (he's not on Rennlist afaik)

Interesting seeing this thread. I'm all for an '85 going for $15k, but this would have to set the bar for most '85s, double what most would bring. Even with this mileage or being a 5spd. Interesting that a year ago I posted a thread about this stunning Meteormetallic '86.5 with a burgundy interior & only 63k miles for sale: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...highlight=86.5
Although it got some positive comments on RL, the car sat in the owner's garage for another year before I connected him up with a car collector that had approached me about buying our '91. I ended up also hooking him up with a '95 GTS 5spd I was aware that was for sale. He bought the '86.5 for $7500 & I think it was a fair deal for both sides. It wasn't a 5 spd, but in pics alone the interior looks nicer. And although the black paint looks nice on the Ebay '85, the '86.5 spent its life in a garage & the paint looked like it was on the show room floor. I am also one who is not the biggest fan of the burgundy interior, though it does compliment well with both the black & dark silver exteriors. The burgundy interior is probably the main reason I did not get more serious about buying the '86.5 myself. But it was a popular interior color in the '85-86's.

So @#%$#@ irritating
As to burgundy interiors, they are the most desirable imo 2nd only to a black/catchers mit combo. I see so many interior colors on here that I couldn't bare to sit in, but I keep my mouth shut about it. The AM Vanquish at the local dealer has a burgundy int. Yes they fade but that can be cured with some dye. When in top shape it's one of the most luxurious colors. (not mine btw)

I think 928 values would skyrocket if Dangles would shut his trap. No ONE has been as negative on 928 values as the dangler here and on the birdboard. Always pounding the drum as to why some car is not worth the money. Going all the way back to a discussion years ago about his factually incorrect claims that they wouldn't sell and 911's sold for more and dealer pack, WTF. And yet he has a junkyard of them.
So @#%$#@ irritating...

The nice thing about forums is that if you disagree with another opinion you may advocate your own and let the readers decide the merit, or simply place those you disagree with on ignore if you cannot support your opinions vs theirs.
