Default 85 Euro Temp Gauge Not Working

The temp gauge in my 85 Euro is not working (the cluster was replaced with a US cluster during the federalization, it seems to be from a later year, maybe an 87 or 88 from the markings). It worked on Saturday, the last time I had it out. The temp was running right around the lower white line, as usual.
It now sits at the bottom.

The wires are connected to the sensor, and seem to have a good connection. I looked in the WSM and only found how to test the CWL/Dash warning by grounding the wire.

Can I ground the other wire? If grounding the one to the CWL system will trigger a "overheat" warning, will grounding the other one peg the gauge?

What other steps should I take?

I've already had the instrument cluster out to fix the odo and speedo, so I know how to get in there, but I'd like to troubleshoot it as far as possible before taking the pod apart.
I searched, but wasn't able to find anything I could use.
