Here are some closeups of the gears. I'm not sure if the cam gears are candidates for re-coating or not. I'm planning of replacing the crank and oil pump gears.

The third one looks bad. Which gear is that? The first two MIGHT just be wear through the coating, which is how they look in your initial photos. Certainly, replacement is best, especially with #3. Anyway, as I said, I replace rather than recoat anyway. The oil pump gear is not that expensive, at least the last time I looked and the replacement gear (steel) is more durable. The cam gears are another story, now somewhere well over $300 each. They appear to have been improved by Porsche over the original gears which used to sell for about $120. If the last photo is the crank gear, it's done and there is no option but replacement.
How about the oil and dirt? Do you think I'm right in blaming the tensioner as the most likely culprit? The other sources would not stop leaking and should have fresh tracks.

The third picture is the oil pump. It looks completely shot. I'm definitely replacing the oil pump and the crank (last picture). I'm going to look at either re-coating my cam gears or trying to find a set that could be re-coated.
The oil and dirt seem to be coming from the tensioner on down. I"m guessing you are correct about it leaking. The oil pump outer seal is leaking. I haven't gotten the inner timing belt guide off yet, but it appears that the FMS is leaking as well.

So I took care of the oil pump today (hopefully at least).
Here are the parts cleaned up.
Here it is back together lubed up and ready to go. I used a bit little much Porsche high pressure lube and it was a bit stiff to turn. I took back it apart, wiped it off lightly, lubricated it with a bit of oil, and spun it. It seemed better then.
Here's a picture of the new front seal (can't see the new radial seal that was installed).
Here's the oil pump's home (techincal term "oil pump hole).
Here is the pump reinstalled and touqued back to 15 ft/lbs. Hopefully that is correct for an 86.5.
This is after removing the water pump with no broken bolts.
Here is the water pump out. It appears to have been rebuilt by an unknown manufacture. I didn't recognize the name on the timing belt either.
This pulley feels and sounds like crap. I'm guessing it's available as a unit.

I used a dremel with a wire wheel to clean the coolant deposits out. I'm not sure if there is anything better to clean stuff like this with. Every time I use one of the dremel wire wheels, I end up with tiny chunks of the bristles stuck in my skin and clothing (even at low to medium speed). The little bastards hurt.
Hopefully the pitting in this picture isn't a sign of what the coolant passages in my heads look like.

I wish I had the room and the compressor for a media blaster. They are nice. Here is a pic of the mount for my CPS. Evidently a previous owner or mechanic got a bit aggravated when replacing it before. I've got a new CPS along with a FPR, FPD, and GB fuel lines inbound from Roger. More to follow.

Remember Do Not use the inner washer on the oil pump gear whenever the Aluminum gear is replaced w/ the Steel gear, use some lock-tight on the outer washer/nut w/ proper torque.

Wow. I didn't see this until removing the harness while cleaning in prep for WP replacement. This is the front harness coming from the 14 pin connector. The break in the cover was wrapped around a point in the block above the water pump. It makes me wonder about the condition of my injector harness. Luckily I bought a nice used front harness from 928 Intl. last winter.
