I looked at the car this morning. My interest was as a car that needed little things I could resell within a year. For that purpose, I don't think there is profit. But...
89 with 160k, automatic. Gauges work. Oil Level warning was on, but owner said he didn't know why. My guess is, low oil level.
The owner is mechanically inexperienced. All work has been done by shops, one locally but of which I don't know they have any 928 experience - Foreign Car Specialists). He didn't know when the TB/WP was done but said the last mechanic looked at them and said they were fine (hmmm).
The car sounds fantastic. It has a stainless RMB and has a deep, throaty rumble. Idle is right and steady, transmission is smooth, steering is tight. Brakes were fine, although felt lighter than mine. Wet under the car but no leaks. The intake and all under hood were baked bad. Some wiring wrapped in electrical tape.
Black exterior has bad swirls and light scratches. Needs a good detailing. Dents around the gas door and a small one in front of the driver headlight. Wheels are very nice, but need a scrubbing. Sunroof has scratches from where it rubs when opening/closing.
Black interior is generally okay. Driver seat is good. Passenger has a small tear. Carpets grubby but complete. Two cracks in the pod. Missing stereo. Busted arm rest. Lots of pieces, like door cards, just need to be snapped into place.
Although he said he paid a fortune to get all the electrical working, here is what I noticed didn't: sunroof, some of driver side seat adjustments, both mirrors, A/C is intermittent. He said the sunroof works sometimes, other times now, so I am betting it's the switch.
This would be a good car for someone who wants to get his feet wet taking care of niggling electrical and just getting things right (intake refinish, TB/WP, fixing door cards, realign sunroof, etc). The mechanicals were very good and the car sounded fantastic.
I bet $3500 could get it. the owner is very motivated. He asked me to let others know about it.

Any vin or lic to check calif history?
I remember a guy here in socal a year or so ago trying to sell a 928 without a title. Story was the bank that originally had a lien on it disappeared so there was nobody to sign off on it and calif DMV wouldn't budge without bank sign off.

I got a note from the seller today. He has dropped his asking price to $3500, which means the selling price is even lower.

I do not think the low oil level nag is the reason the car is priced so low. At any rate it's kinda interesting, the 89 has a more fun auto trans rear axle ratio. It's tempting to get it for the interior and a few other parts.

I spoke with him a while. Its a driver, so I will do a few checks and drive her home. Goal is to fly up a week from this Thursday. 1000 mile drives are cake in a 928

You're welcome to use my garage and tools, extra relays, fuses and whatever else.

I am bringing my porsche 1st aid kit and my tools... I can almost pull the entire car apart with the tools I take on my road trips. Down side is I have to check them... Always worries I won't get there with what I left with...
As long as the engine is strong and I have the forward gears, I can wing the rest . Brought Laurie's 89 from Maimi with the biggest butchery of wiring I have ever seen and no reverse... This already sounds like stonger driver than what her's was... Now her's is nearly 100% - or as much as any DD 89 can be
Not sure yet. I have had both thoughts. Although we all know how long these babbies will go, they have little value when they close in on 200K unless they have been maintaied damn near perfectly and documented their entire lives... I need to see ther first.
There are 3 89s right now in the family and a spare motor with ~80K on it, plus Lauries/928 Dame's 89 in CA, so having a full spare is not a bad idea.
If I can quickly make it a reliable driver, my dad might long term borrow it from me. Black on Black here in AZ is not a good idea.
I like the idea of the spare brains and other parts, so if I do part it, ill let folks know here. I won't need the seats or dash or those parts, so those will go first to the do not bake in the sun and damage. Hard to part a good running car though - and working on these is almost therapy for me anyhow...

Congrats. If you change your mind or have any reason to not complete the sale let me know asap. I am in Arvada right now and would drive it home to Nebraska today. Just out here on vacation and have a few extra dollars right now from a good deal I made last week. Keep us posted on how it turns out.
