So I've been lucky to have one of those rare 928's that have held it's AC for years. It was retrofitted to the new freon several years ago by the P/O and has held it's charge well for the 4 years I've had it.
I know time is my enemy though - just wondering if most things on a 79 928 AC are still repairable/replaceable and where the weak spots are. I don't want to Jinx myself but I would like to know what the best case/worst case is when it comes to keeping in Freon.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Worse case is replacing an evaporator, but not common.
Typical first signs of leaks:
Compressor, usually a shaft seal.
Hoses: they are prone to crack and the fittings rust, normal after 25 years.
Compressor to condenser refrigerant line.
Compressor to evap pipe refrigerant line.
Relay on the control board.
Maybe a servo or two.
But, you are in luck for DIY support here on Rennlist and Pelican.
And, there is a great hands on site here:

Grab yourself of a copy of the Porsche PET and a shop manual and you are
set for life.
