Why a 928 ?

Burning Brakes
My dad always loved P-cars and as a bot we went to the Porsche dealer often, looking around. I was always entranced by the rear of the car, with the recessed tail lamps. I got a Tamiya model of one and assembled it (badly) as a kid… Later on, while other guys in high school had pictures of girls in their lockers, I had pictures of 928s.
Driving down the street in California I saw one for sale, an 86.5. It needed a TB/WP immediately, had some weird wiring that had to be cleaned out by a PO, the front and rear bumper covers looked like a red M&M that had been sucked on for a few seconds, but other than that it ran great. Later, I picked up a lovely 87 white S4. I love both children equally.

I was bitten by the Porsche bug at about age 3 when my parents got me a scale model of a 1989 911 Speedster. After high school I kept my eyes peeled for a nice 944 (didn't have much money to spend) when I stumbled across a 928 on Craigslist. I had read about them in books, they were always the ultimate Porsche to me and I never considered I would be able to own such a high-end car. But when I saw the price I had to look. At $4k it was far from perfect, but it was complete and I had to have it.
Many issues manifested over my 4 years of ownership from exploding clutches to major fluid leaks and it has taken lots of $$$ and frustration to keep it running. But it's been an awesome daily driver for the past 3 years and I wouldn't trade it for anything. My dad thinks it is an unsafe piece of junk for some reason but what does he know, he drives a 2005 Grand Caravan!
I have thought about what I would replace it with if I had to get rid of it, but nothing compares, everything else seems like a downgrade even if it has more HP. I'm hooked for life!

At the time when I was in college it was the coolest car, spaceship like, fast, sexy. I bought mine because it was the nicest example I could find for what I could afford.

It's all about the looks. I loved the original body style as a teenager. I didn't care so much about performance, although subconsciously I knew that came with the badge on the hood. After driving the PPE for 17 years, I decided I it was time to get something more classy to take my wife out in. Around the same time a buddy of mine posted a pic on FB with his 928 in the background, and I was hooked again, only now I could afford what I wanted.

Since you started this thread, tell us what other car can you get with the level of uniqueness, performance, reliability (once sorted) and build quality of a 928 for a comparable price?
Get back to us with your list of contenders. I bet you can't name a one.

Uniqueness, nothing can touch the My 928, But My 98 BMW M Roadster Kills my 84 928s for speed and handling and reliability , and I sold my 2000 Camaro SS, I can buy one like it it now for what I paid for My 928, it was fun but generic. I have had 3 928s and loved them all, I just wanted to know what other people feel ....not slamming the P car

"Out of all the less quirky, better performing and cheaper cars why did you buy [a 928]?"
I would like to see your list of the above. (Dang! Randy V beat me to it!)

Race Car
Any other alternative you may come up with will be missing at least one critical component. The 928 just has a mix of so many things. Some of the big ones: it can fit four people if you really need to, it has usable trunk space, it looks great even today, it sounds great, it's relatively cheap, you can get one with ~500hp for under $20k, it has great design quality. What other car is/can do all these things?

I already stated how we got our car (silver wedding anniversary present to ourselves) but didn't really state why.
Back in the fifties, Mercedes was running the W196 in the various european races. I was in the army at the time and stationed in Germany. Got to look at these beautiful racers in the MB museum and really appreciated the beautiful engineering design in the car. At that time, it was the ultimate in automotive design and I had it fixed in my mind that some day I might get a car that was the ultimate in latest engineering.
The 928S4 happened along just as we were preparing to celebrate our silver anniversary. While the 1987 Ferrari was a possibility, it did not fit in with where we wanted to go skiing (or our budget, for that matter). I wasn't crazy about either the MB cars or the 911s. MB just didn't turn me on for some reason and the 911 was, in my opinion at the time, a coffin wagon - Pellie Lindberg, hockey goalie for the Philidelphia Flyers was killed in one which, I assume was a result of oversteer. The 928 was the right compromise of great engineering and good looks plus it borders on being an exotic.
The car is not perfect with some crazy quirks like the tb and some cheap accessories but it is still a great ride.

You could buy a 2000 Camaro SS in near-mint condition for $14,000? I have my doubts about that. First of all try finding one of those old axe-murderer cars in excellent condition. If you can, I have trouble believing its owner would part with it for so little. Does any recent sports car have the 2+2 seating and hatchback? I couldn't find any except 1990s Japanese worth far more. I looked at a Mitsubishi 4000 for a second, until I noticed it was priced to sell -- for $25K! I was literally *forced* into buying a 928 because of the configuration I wanted. At least that's what I keep telling the wife

I've always liked the looks of the 928 since I was a teenager,I've always been a Pcar
Fan and have watched there racing through the years. So I started w a 944T and went I
over board with larger turbo and everything else that gors along with that ,I liked it but didnt love it, during this I added a Cayenne S and after 3 years w the 944 I decided to
sell it and look for something else.So I wasn't sure what I wanted and a buddy of mine saw
this 1 owner 928 and sent me a link... So after telling myself do I really need another project? So I went to see it drove it and it just felt like this is the one.1 year later I'm stoked,
and my short list of things I want to improve keep growing...
