Engine vibration damper - alternative
Just want to make a quick post for those who need to replace the vibration dampers of the engine for early 928 (1978-1983)
They tend to leak easily after some time.
Mine was leaking and I did not intend spend 2x $150 for both engine shocks.
Well I finale found the alternative @ Mercedes : Mercedes part nr 604-2000314 or febi bilstein nr 06569.
These shocks are used on Mercedes 190, 300...and only cost $50 !
The only thing you have to do is enlarge the hole of one of the ends of the shock. Hole of mercedes shock= 8mm and hole to fit Porsche shock is 10mm since bolt is larger. But this can be done easily since the material is aluminium.
And you probably need to shim since shock heads are smaller.
Have fun

I believe they changed the design due to reliability and because of engine changes later onwards.
Moreover engine vibrations are directly transmitted towards the chasis
via the engine mounts, so integrating damping directly into the engine mounts is better than supplementary dampers.

I tried buying and modifying the Mercedes shock way back. Drilling the larger hole was easy. Adding washer to centralize the mount straightforward.
However when looking at the tech specs the spring rate was different to the original shock so I stopped this project.
You can buy the original from myself for $63.95 or shop around and I have seen prices around $55.

Do you have a part number? As far as I am aware the originals are Stabilus 143 9DY
