^^^^ no add the swepco before you change the oil then run it for a 500 miles,
then change the oil,
the additive will loosen dirt so
add it,
run it,
then dump it.
add another can if the noise doesn't go away

Had tappet noise until I replaced these. Results included oil pressure improvement.

You know what they say, 'once you go pins, you'll never go back'.

If the noise is intermittant that's likely just sticking a bit. My car's previous owner used castrol and came
with that problem. I switched to my favorite, Valvoline Duralube, semi-synthetic and it cleared up nicely.

Just to bring some closure, I could not find Swepco locally, didn't want to wait for it to be shipped, so I changed the oil and filter. Used Mobil 1 15W-50, and the noise went away, and actually the engine sounds quieter overall. A nice purr. Not sure what oil was in there prior, but I am in a hot climate and I run this for the summer. When I yank the intake I'll check on the oil pin plugs.

Good call.
Even though I use Mobil 1 too, and it has 1300-1600 ppm of zinc, I add half a bottle of Risloine 3x zddp concentrate to each oil change. Even though I cured my chattering with the pins, the cams appear to love this stuff - I, and my guests in the car, noticed the difference, and all was running good at the time. My 'purr' at idle is now even 'smoother'. It is the 4405 Rislone at Amazon. This stuff goes fast. I just bought six bottles for my shelf as I had only one left.

BTW, you wouldn't have to remove the intake to install these pins. Just the valve cover has to come off. Driver's side much easier than the passenger side.

16V cars don't have the pins/plugs. Sitting for a while most likely allowed one of your lifters to leak down and collapse. Happens quicker as the lifters get varnished/dirty. The internal valving in them gets sticky and allows the oil pressure to slowly leak out. It sometimes requires getting the oil fully up to temp to get them to pump back up full of oil. Try adding some Swepco 502 oil conditioner. Run the car about 500 miles after adding the Swepco then do an oil & filter change. The Swepco is a detergent that will loosen dirt and deposits so you want to do the oil change before all that stuff starts to re-deposit in your oil system. If you still have trouble with noisy lifters hit it again with Swepco. If the leakdown and tappet noise is due to dirty lifters this will cure it. If it doesn't the problem is elsewhere.

Odds are NOT that it is a stuck lifter on an 87. Most likely cam plugs. Continued attempts to "free" the lifter will just increase damage to engine as lifters are not getting oil. Oil pressure will not show as lower, as low pressure to lifters is localized. Just fix the problem, it is easy, and not expensive.

Are these plugs a problem for 91's or was the design eventually improved? The linked thread gives me the impression that these were eventually changed to metal. Thanks.

Hi Mark, I got mine from Pelican. Have not tried it yet but planning to as soon as I get some time. Going to add it and run it for 500 miles as Merlin suggests.
