Default 87 928 S4 Throttle cable adjustment

Hey guys I am adjusting throttle cable . It's way off can they stretch a ton ? The throttle cable opens like 3/4 and it's at it's limit. PO has it way out of whack . Any ideas on starting from scratch ?

if the car is an auto there are 4 cables at the quadrant, the mechanism where they all connect.

back them all off then they are adjusted in sequence of: throttle cable (quadrant to throttle), transmission cable, gas pedal (pedal to quadrant), cruise control

I have the same car and the same issue, been messing with it for weeks! Still not right, I need to start from scratch as well.

MrMerlin left this on one of my postings.

"SO you must start with the throttle plate cable, this is the cable that goes around the wheel.

first once the quadrant is moved slightly you should hear a click from the TPS,

SO adjust this cable so when the quadrant is moved slightly you get the click,
same for releasing the quadrant you should hear a click, this must also happen,
then fit the Bowden cable

NOTE if the throttle plate cable is loose it makes the bowden cable effectively too tight.
and visa versa.

a small change on the T plate cable changes the adjustment on the Bowden cable.

NOTE any adjustment you make to the throttle cable will affect the bowden cable adjustment,
and thus any of your adjustments will now have to be redone.

NOTE I am not talking about the gas pedal cable adjustment,
this should be done after the T plate and Bowden are fitted,,
then make sure you get full throttle operation with the pedal put to the floor.

Connect the Cruise control last with some slack in the cable"

Worked like a charm.

I have the gas pedal adjustment extended way out and throttle is only open about 3/4 with pedal all the way down. Seems like cables are stretched huge amount . Seems like cable would break before breaking stretching that much.

None of the cables should be at the 'extreme' ideally. Pop them all of and re-align relative to the throttle cable. Loosen them all to about the halfway point, and start with the throttle cable per Stan's (MrMerlin's) instructions.

O.K. so P.O. adjusted everything to extreme because it was off the throttle guide wheel . Put cable back on wheel and adjusted everything . Boden cable still at limit has tension but wont down shift unless I manually down shift it ? Second gear start up matter how hard throttle is pressed .Trans shifts good beside that . I am getting closer. Its amazing how much people screw up these cars and then say the 928 have so many problem!

The cables should be as follows:
Throttle - top nearest to intake
Transmission - top nearest to fender
'Gas' Pedal - bottom nearest to intake
Cruise control - bottom nearest to fender

On mine, when I'm done adjusting, the assembly 'leans' back at about a 30 degree angle. I start with the throttle cable at the shortest setting and then back it off several turns so that some threads are showing, then go in the order per previous posts for the other cables.

NOTE adjusting the throttle plate cable ( the one that goes around the white wheel) will also change the adjustment of the bowden cable.

if you loosen the T plate cable then your effectively tightening the bowden cable for the transmission.
so if it has been shifting perfectly then you just made an adjustment that will change shifting point.

I got throttle cable adjusted ! Then adjusted bowden cable still not downshifting ? And it is at the end of its travel on adjuster(bowden cable) . I adjusted all the slack out and now I am at the end of adjuster. The reason PO sold car was trans would downshift on own. (and numberous outer things. He was a HACK ) . But it shifted o.k. but wouldnt downshift when I got it . When I saw cables out of whack I got excited and was like this should be easy .Trans fluid changed and new filter. Upshifts are good.Merlin cables are in right place for sure. I didnt think anyone could make adjustments this far off! So I thought something was wrong !

Now that the throttle cable is adjusted, other adjustments can now be made. From what you describe I would loosen the kickdown (Bowden) cable 4 turns of the cap. Test, and note the differences. If going in the right direction, adjust until perfect. Be sure to keep the throttle cable in position right before the TPS click.

Another thought, when you have the Bowden cable detached, do you feel a 'springs' tension on it when you give it a little tug ? If you do not, the cable maybe detached at the lever arm at the transmission. If so, it is an easy fix.

These Ball Cups on the end of the cables come in at least 2 different lengths. The PO's of this world could have them in the wrong order.
I would like to know the correct position for cup lengths as well if anybody has it and willing to share.
