I just purchased a 82 928. The car was sitting for 5 years at a shop. Doesnt start with the key, will start with starter fluid, I loosened the fuel pressure regulator, and fuel came spurting out, so I think the new pump is working(I think) now I would like to check if its getting spark( it starts with starter fluid), but not when I turn the key. Changed the fuel pump relay, cleaned the tank and added new gas, please help...
I). You need to read the new members thread.
II). You may have the mechanical injection system on your car.....if that's the case, you may need to do a clean and re & re on all the bits upstream from the pump/filter particularly the "fuel distributor". this I understand can be involved, but not impossible.
I keep saying it wont start with the key, and thats wrong. its not getting gas to the engine9 thats what I mean)wont start with gas, but will with starter fluid...
Post a pic of your motor so we can see what injection system you have, and the condition of everything .. then we can give you more accurate suggestions.
US '82 would not be CIS, so fuel 'distributor' isn't likely.
82_928, I replied to your PM and email with suggestions on checking for injectors working (clicking), and further diagnosis with a 'noid light.

Met the OP at the Saturday evening gathering in Orange County. Nice guy, working through issues like this to get his new car working. He's replaced the fuel pump relay and I think the pump, but has not done a fuel pressure check yet to verify that there's adequate pressure. Question to the group: Does his '82 US car use the same fuel rail cap that's on my later LHA car? If so, we can use my fuel pressure gauge to verify fueling at least to the rails. The car is an hour or more away from me so it's going to be a bit of remote diagnosis for a bit I think.

So much for my initial theory....
+1 on the noid light.
Did the filter get replaced with the pump?
No idea on the rails.
I didnt change it, but its ordered and on the way...
That could potentially be the issue.....once you've changed out the filter, do a flow test per the WSM. If the flow checks, then on to the injectors...
Try a bottle of Techron and 8 oz. of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) to the clean tank. MMO will help lube the pump, and both will help clear out dirty injectors, but do this AFTER you replace the filter. BTW, I add these about every fourth tank filling to keep the system happy.

Bob,
Yes, they are the same cap. Considering that the car sat up, I would definitely remove both rails after you verify fuel pressure and confirm that the injectors are firing with the noid light. There is a good chance that the injectors are frozen if the fuel pump was replaced because it was seized from varnished fuel.
