Default frayed wire coverings and Red Paint

As I'm going through the undercarriage of the car to update/replace and clean, I've found that most of the wiring to each wheel for ABS sensor and brake pad wear sensor has dried/cracked covering.

Has anybody dealt with this? Any suggestions?

Also, what is with the red paint on every single bolt & nut on the car. Was this done at the factory?

Thanks,
Bob

I do know that paint or crayon on fasteners or anywhere on the body is used in assembly to guarantee identical fitment, and for torque values, alignment, but you would think it would have worn off with the exposure to the elements, and surely those CV joints have been replaced at LEAST once in the life of the car, can't be original.

All my ABS sensor harnesses and connectors are like that too, i have had some success with self curing/fusing silicone tape, you should be able to get it at any local hardware store. I still am not satisfied with that though, i'd rather get new harnesses and connectors and do it right.

It the insulation on the wiring is still in good condition and has not cracked, I would suggest clean up the area, remove the cracked and brittle rubber coating and you apply a rubber weld tape (self amalgamating tap) to coverer the wiring.

When the 928 cars were built and the under seal coating was applied the area was then painted with the colour of the car (IIRC)

When I had replaced my transmission and had the rear suspension out I thought it a good time to address my crumbling insulation that I had too. As the wires are 'twizzled' I first used the vulcanizing silicon tape and it got the loom 'twizzled' tightly. I then used black split tubing that I put over the segments. I then added small black nylon ties to keep the tubing honest. The size of the newly vulcanized loom inside the tubing fit nicely into the clips on the body and suspension. Again small ties were added to these clips where needed. I think the double layer of protection should last a good while. Sorry I didn't take pics of this.

+1 to the addition of a split concertina plastic covering. I have used this on the HT leads to give added insulation and when I have run new wires in my vehicles I enclose these in the split concertina plastic covering. Being concertina it allows the covering to be bent in any direction and then I secure it with nylon zip ties.
