Default Speaker Grills

I found some used door panels from another year to replace the thrashed ripped up ones that were on my car. Had a couple of questions:

Does anyone know the size and where to find 2 replacement grills, missing one on each side. I'm not concerned about putting speakers in there, just wanted to find black grills to cover the holes.

Would these fit, or does anyone have other recommendations ?

Also, the panels had some gnarly mildew and I cleaned that off, what brand cleaner or method would make these vinyl panels look better?

On the cleaner I'd use something mild like maybe windex..after you clean them pick up some Wipe New...it actually works very well on vinyl /plastic to give it a permanent shiny(wet) look.

Lookin' good! I would normally say pick up some used factory speaker grilles, maybe from 928 intl., but I am not sure how you would mount them without the speakers, since I think the grille frames are threaded and screw onto the speaker assembly. If the ones you show come with a means to mount them to the door panel without speakers, I think they look pretty close to factory. If you're not putting speakers in there, I would cut of a piece of black fabric to put behind the grilles so you don't see the red of the inner door through the mesh grilles.

As for cleaning the panels, if they are vinyl, I would use soapy water, or some vinyl cleaner from an auto parts store (Griots makes a good interior cleaner, but any should do the trick), and then use Aerospace 303 protectant for a low sheen finish. I don't think you want that "wet" look....

The grills mount onto the speakers so you'll need to get the speakers just for the grill itself.

How about cutting round pieces of hardboard, plastic, etc., covering them in black vinyl and screwing in place?

Cleaned up the panels, thanks for all the suggestions

Also this morning, I bought some speaker grills from the link in the original post after seeing the following comment on the sales page

Just got done putting my speakers back together after finding an open connection. That's a different topic regarding "Still fooling with my radio". However, for what it's worth, the threaded adapter (not the grill) is a separate piece (at least in my car) so one can re-use it even if you are changing speakers. However, warning, these threaded pieces are very, very fragile. I'll bet Porsche didn't do their homework on these pieces.

Years back I found some speaker rings made of aluminum. Wish that guy would come back, he'd sell a ton of the things.

The threaded grill covers were used up to '88. From 89 onwards they're clip-on and break really easily when removing them.

Someone posted a repair of the grill edges years ago..

edit: found it - it was Mike Ballard:

The metal grills were very inexpensive and screwed right in. Have cleaned the door panels, but still looking for a product to get a not too glossy deep black.

Check out Sonnax products at Car Care Specialties- low gloss options and offers an o/c discount IIRC. No affiliation.

Griot's Garage has a vinyl and rubber dressing that is the best I've found ever. Just the right finish; neither glossy or flat...just right. I use it on the wing of my S4 and the finish is wonderful.

They also carry it at Advance Auto here in Virginia, or you can go online:

How long does the luster hold up when used on the interior before you have to reapply it?
