Something that was attached to the side of my glovebox, called a "lamp failure control relay" ?

The lamp controller for warning when bulb(s) are out - sidemarkers, taillights, front signal lights, brake lights (including 3rd).
Add:
Tom it should say Lampenkontrollgerӓt - Lamp Controller.

OK, I get it, sends a signal to digital display to spell out something like "Tail Lights Out" ... haven't seen one of those messages in a long time, but makes sense that some little doo-dad would be needed to figure it out and tell the cluster ...

When enabled, this circuit randomly give a false positive signal of a failure, or a true negative signal of a failure anywhere in the 3,548 bulbs, lamps, indicators, dials, *****, switches, and rheostats.
When you hear the radio switch from cool jazz to 'pop goes the weasel' you know it's coming.

If you change any of the sidemarkers, tail lights, brake lights, front signal lights over to LED from incandescent, the Lamp Controller will register this as a fault. It senses the voltage difference between a pair when a bulb is out. With the low energy requirement of the LED's, it will read falsely. Borland has an excellent write up to address this.
