Excel spreadsheet, and then a folder with supporting documents, invoices, bills, printed instructions, etc.

Excel headers of: Date / Mileage / Repair or Work Done / Parts Used / Cost of Parts / Cost of Labor (this is often blank) / Notes

I have been doing this for a few years, and while it is handy for keeping track of when work needs to be done, I find the true benefit is when a car goes up for sale. Instead of scanning or faxing over records, just attach the file and the prospective buyer has all the info he or she needs.

I use a 3 ring binder as well. Punch holes in receipts, invoices. Hand write dates, mileage and what was done.

As with my son's car Marvin. I kept a on going thread with tons of pics showing his body restoration, interior work. After completed I just PRINTED it out and added it to his binder.

Very true.

But there's something about sitting down, opening the book, grabbing a pen and writing it out that I find appealing.
It's not the same when you power up the 'puter and type it on the keyboard.

I use "about my car" application (Mac) and App for iPhone and iPad. Basically input the service/repair performed from either a receipt of service, parts and your labor, etc.

This is inputted either on the computer then sent to your email address in which the iphone or iPad App asks for it and updates the information.

I found this useful for on the go reference. the information is backed up in three digital locations plus of course your hard copy records.

Update the mileage and service intervals you place into the system will remind when it's coming up.

no vehicle limit and an image is saved of your car..Which is good if keeping track of multiple vehicles.
stores, Vin, insurance information and drivers licence if need be. Again, stored on portable devices so any information that may arise can be accessed right away.

Inexpensive. $5.00 for the App(s). I think $10.00 (or maybe $5.00) for the Mac application.

As for Android, etc. No idea of this is available) But a quick search is not hard to do.

Notebook.

Big notebook has everything spent on or done to the car, less fuel costs. Notes, details, pictures, instructions. Most important: anything that deviates from what was there originally. For those that have replaced the AC clutch relay in the control head with aftermarket, that started with the documentation page I made for my logbook over fifteen years ago now, so you get an idea of what goes in there. With digital cameras so prolific, later docs have become more picture-rich.

In each car is a mini logbook with fuel costs plus line notations of when maintenance items were done (miles, date, cost); that's the one that triggers regular services like fluid changes, since I see it every time I put gas in the car. Small noisy stuff like wiper blade refills get logged in the mini log, and a similar notation is made in the bigger book in tabular format, updated once or twice a year.

K is a CPA, so there's no hiding the true costs of ownership on any of the toys. If a dollar is spent on anything, it's recorded and posted to the car account in her accounting software. I talked her out of keeping line-by-line costs from parts invoices, since the big binder keeps copies of those with reference to the procedure that used them. Funny, she treats the 928 as an asset.

Thumbs up S.L.E.P. THE CAR

Set up a S.L.E.P.(service life extension program) for the car. A list of All routine maint. done on the car. A list of all 'defects' found and corrected with parts and service done to correct 'defects' including before and after pictures and prices of the parts used. List EVERYTHING. I did this with my '79 RX-7 and wrote it all in the back pages of my Hayne's manual. When I sold the car the next owner had very little 'wiggle room' on the price because everything was documented and he knew exactly what he was getting.
