Default fuel starvation issue?

My 1979 racer recently got a fuel starvation issue when running under 1/4 tank... I just had the fuel tank pulled and cleaned, replaced all the fuel lines and a new fuel sender. When the old fuel sender was removed it was "stuck" into the top of the warped plastic piece inside the tank...I guess 34 year old plastic has its limits..... When it was removed the top "lid" broke off with it.....so the cylinder where the fuel sender reads not is open on the top....

Fast forward on track.....once I get to about 1/4 tank the car will start to stumble in high G left turns....classic fuel starvation....it never used too, so I guess that little "lid" did its job..... Since that part is molded into the gas tank, it can't be replaced.....and a whole new tank is a PITA....

I was thinking about installing a surge tank....CIS 928's even came with one....plenty of aftermarket companies make surge tanks for race applications...

How big of a surge tank would I need....I have seen some quite small and some 1 liter?
