New GTS owner and something to fix....
Hi!
I am francesco from North Italy and I am the new owner of a 1992 GTS .
The car was sold originally in Italy then went to belgium and france, wher i Found it, I bought the car and took back to its original market country, it's nachtblau with blue leather,123000 kms ...
Mechanical stuff was kept really in mint condition, only issues comes from a badly connected radio ,badly ogne rear woofers and cooling fans.
I searched on the forum, but I haven't found cooling fan trouble like my one.
This is the scenario: as soon as I turn the key in position 1(instrument dash on) fans start and they keep on running at max speed also when I tunr on the engine, nevermind the air/coolant temperature.
It seems thay goes at max speed also when I am on the street....but at traffic lights, when engine is idling you can notice the lud noise of fans.
Coolant temperature on the gauge , when engine warmed up, goes from 80 to 85 C.....
To turn off the fans I have to turn off the engine.
I read a lot of stuff and I know that fans heva to stop when You open the bonnet, not on my car.
Removed wires on the air sensor on the top of intake manifold, to no avail.
I don't know where the rad sensor is located,I jknow that sometimes mos-fets on the final stage unit can break, I know that sometimes the a/C switch can be the culprit.(when I turn on a/c I have no change, fans run at max speed).
You are really expert:
Where do you point your finger, if you are searching for the cause of this problem?
thank you so much!

Hi Francesco
Was going to say intake switch bad but you have disconnected that!
In that case someone has disconnected radiator coolant sensor (maybe firgot to connect when replacing failed rad?). It's 2 pin plug low down near bottom rad hose. Bottom left corner if you were sitting in car.
It's a squeeze fir hand from top but if problem reaching you can reconnect it more easily from underneath car.

Sounds like possibly the temperature sensor in the bottom front of the radiator, on the left side of the car. You can see it under the hood up front, way down on the bottom corner..to your right, looking from the front of the car.
If that is bad or unplugged, the fans go high speed at all times.
There might be some fan control module failures that cover this pattern as well.

Hi Francesco, welcome!
Is your heater control in recirculate mode? You could try moving the lower slider to the right one position, to the square icon. Recirculate mode causes the radiator fans to run always.

hello!
didn't expect all these replies!
thank you!
lower slider doesn't affect the fans operation....I tested it and fans runs always.
I will look at lower temp sensor in the rad.
I didn't read anywehre that this sensor , if bad or unplugged, makes the fans running continously, even if the engine hood is open.
I will try to locate it and see what' s happened.
Now I have to check radio connections, because previous owner took the car to a mental to swap the original radio with a becker indianapolis....
Then I have to investigate why the left mirror goes left and right , but has no up/down movement.....and why rear brakes squeal slightly also when I dont use brakes, then squeal like pigs when I brake , also softly.....
Suggestions:
I took the car at home last sunday, I did 550 kms , 520 of swiss highway(80-100 km/h) , doing about 10km/liter....do you think it's ok ?
engine was cured fastidiosly by previous owner, and a lot of stuff was replaced and checked to ensure a perfect mechanic status on this car.
anyway the PSD oil was never changed....
Is it a DIY job or do I need special tools?
before falling in love with 928s I was (and I am still) a "bimmer"(my family buys BMW since 1971) , and I am able to rebuild ZF auto gearboxes, do you think I am good enough for this job?
again(sorry I am asking too much questions, I know):
my car is manual , sometimes I put in first -second-third gear, but when it was the turn to change in 4th gear, I found that I was shifting again in second?
Infamous shift cup?
thank you so much guys, never had a so big wellcome in other (bmw and non BMW) forums!

Francesco,
The PSD fluid is brake fluid. Here we usually use a good brake fluid like Castrol LM GTA that is slow to absorb water. Change recommendation is every 3 years, so your car probably needs this done. It is a bit complicated, so if you can find a workshop manual you might be able to do it, or do a search on this Forum for a procedure. A Porsche dealer should be able to do it in an hour probably.
Where in Italy do you reside? My wife and I have traveled to Italy many times, and love your country.

Welcome Francesco .. we'd love to see some pictures of your car.
You say the rear woofers are gone .. I assume you mean the largest rear speakers? If so, when you carefully remove the grilles (careful don't crack them), you'll probably find that the perimeter foams are disintegrating. If that's the problem, I can give you the sizes and some sources for new ones for all the speakers, and the method to replace them. Just replacing the foams renews the original performance.
Here is a photo of one of the large rear speakers after refoaming, and one of the door speakers with disintegrating foam edge and a new foam next to it.

foam of rear speakers is not disintegrating....there's no foam anymore!
strangely, only on the rear left one....the other one is burping/farting something I cannot explain like music....
I think the previous owner , like I said, did the job personally or let a stupid do the radio connections....
I believe he used pre out instead of amplified ones or viceversa.....anyway, I'd like to find the old radio the car had, a blaupunkt rdm 104.no the best sound of the 21st century, but something that can handle a 1992 stereo system....with 10 speakers it can't be a bad system, anyway.
tonight I will check sensors and make some picture.

The REAR rear speakers...useless anyhow. Not worth the time/money to replace when you fix the rest of the system. Just concentrate on the main speakers from the back seat forward..the rear quarter window speakers..not so much.

Gary/Francesco: Porsche has a special tool to activate the pump. You don't need it. There is a DIY involving applying 12V to the pump; it's not that bad, but finding the step-by-step is another problem.
Francesco: Welcome, definitely worth the time to find this procedure as a new system is very expensive and it will not last w/o periodic flushing.
And a brief search here turns up
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-question.html,
see post 3 and reference to a "PSD Fluid Flushing Procedure" by Louie Ott and John Veninger at 928OC.org. I searched there under "PSD" and nothing comes up, which is hard to believe. I wonder about their search function. Gary any thought on this or where the file is?

I would have suggested Francesco join, as an item like this is well worth the price of membership; but I'm paid and logged in an I could not find it, , not sure what that means. Agreed and understood though that somebody in management there would have to give permission.
