PO had something installed (long since gone) but obviously hacked the wiring for the head unit of the radio.
I seem to be able to trace all the wiring between the fader switch on the driver side to the amp on the passenger side but can not seem to determine where the original head wiring may have tied in.
Can anyone advise where the standard radio head unit wiring runs to interface with the fader/amp wiring? I hate to have to pull the seats and start digging into the harness that all seems in good shape just to figure out where it should tie in.
Bump -
Just hoping to know if the head unit wiring comes out of the cross car harness on the right or left side of the tunnel; unless of course it doesn't come out of that harness at all and runs along the firewall.
Not sure if this will help, but on my '84 the factory audio system wiring ran from the head unit, down each the side of the tunnel and then across the front of each seat, tucked under the front edge of the seat rails . I would imagine the wiring location would be the same on your car but I may be wrong. On the driver's side there should be a little carpeted cover just under the front edge of the seat, remove it and see what wires you can find under there.
I would suggest you obtain the Porsche Wiring Diagram for the initial installation and check out this wiring and then I you have the wiring diagram from the radio manufacturer, work out the correct method this radio should have been installed to marry into what is left of the original installation.
Draw up a set of installation drawings and then require the radio into the car system ensuring functionality is achieved.
When installing ensure that wiring is the correct gauge of wire and colour coding, and when all is completed with identification tags placed on the wiring you have installing, draw up the circuits onto a copy of the original electrical drawing thereby ensuring you have a correct installation drawing of your radio.
Thanks guys, got side tracked and so I will check on it next weekend.
Tails: I have the original wiring diagrams but they don't provide wire routing in the car, just what the ends connect to. From what I can tell the PO didn't use any of the original wiring but as I said it has all been pulled from the console area.
Alan: I am putting in an original head unit and amp (I know not the best) so my goal was to get the wiring back to stock as well. Not that I am big on stock but given I have had the car for several years without a radio I am not sure I will bother to turn it on very often.
