Roger has cheaper (new) cam gears made - $315ish from memory.

Looking at the pics, it looks like there hasn't been much wear to the metal itself - I can't see a dish on the pic showing shiny teeth. You might be able to get yours re-coated?

Andy sent me a higher resolution picture of the driver's side gear and it's pretty bad, sharp, beveled edges on the teeth. Mine were in similar condition when I removed them in '06. I wouldn't bother going to the time & expense.

Hey Dr. Bob,

At your request, here are some pics. Is the one next to the PS Reservoir the one you were talking about?

The other shows clearly my hall sensor and the connector. They are VERY intact!

I'm not seeing that with the pictures here. The passenger side looks fine and it appears to only have a small amount of wear on the drivers side. Mongo, E-mail me a high res of that drivers. I've got a used one here that is better than that.

On a side note, at least there is some light in the tunnel here with a tip for those who have some bolts they want to clean up the heads on for that little extra detail. Take some 0000 (polishing grade) steel wool and some WD-40. Spray the bolts completely, wipe some of it off and proceed to rub the steel wool on the head of the bolt. The longer the bolts sit in WD40, the more crud gets removed.

This also works great on radiator hose clamps!

Yeah the passenger side has a few dings in the coating, but not anywhere near as bad as the driver's side. It probably has some life left in it.

Why would one cam gear have more wear than another?

Usually the passenger side has worse wear due to an improperly tensioned belt. If the drivers side is worse? Well, **** kinda happens I suppose.

When you reassemble it all, be sure to check the torque on the cam gears and get it right the first time.

I ran my finger on multiple teeth on that gear and can feel a smooth transition from anodizing to bare aluminum.

Andy-

The gears need to be good enough to last another 50k+ when you put them back in. Neither of yours is even close to that good. Bite the bullet and get the right bits. Give the car a fighting chance!

One of the dangers in buying a used 928 is finding cut corners. These old gears will last long enough to sell it. Pretty soon you find yourself bidding on used ALS and rotors, and that used timing belt on cl looked great in the pictures...

Andy, turn that motor to 45o BTDC before you get too much further along. You're not there now, the distributor rotor is pointing at about 8:30 o'clock.

Just note how the harness routes in the clamp so it goes back the same way. I did mine a little more creatively, with the harness running across the top of the Hall sensor. It didn't like the magnetic fields from the conductors in the harness, so it faulted and retarded the timing.

That power feed by the reservoir is the one I mentioned. Needs to come off before the belt will come off.

My oil pump gear looks brand new.

Car is at TDC and cam gear marks are off at most 1/8". I can assume 1/2 tooth off for both.
