I didn't have time to work on it this weekend all that much since I was out of town. I'm ripping the driver side cam cover off today and pulling my radiator hoses. I noticed that the two smaller ones (bleeder hose and hose to reservoir) aren't really in the way of anything. I am debating on removing those. The large upper and lower will be removed for sure.

Next question is about the cam covers. I'm going to be repainting them as well as replacing the piston side pad for the chain tensioners.

What parts will I need to replace on my cam covers themselves when I strip the covers for repaint? I know there are numerous plastic and rubber grommets. Due to the mileage of this motor, I want to replace anything rubber as well as brittle plastic on them. What parts would I need? I don't have PET anymore on my computer so I'm SOL on obtaining part numbers. If anyone has these, it will be extremely helpful when I put together my order list. Thanks in advance!

Contact your favorite vendor, and have them put together a care package for you. They already know what you need for each project section, saves you head scratching over what works and what's been superseded. Just a thought.

Thanks! I think I'll do that and include that low pressure power steering hose that's leaking.

Now here's the part where I get worried. This is the driver side cam gear. There is a little bit of wear on the gear itself. The shiny spots are noticeable in the picture.

Andy,

That harness you asked about earlier is in the 2nd picture. You will have to disconnect it to remove/install the T belt.

See if a vendor has good used gears. I got some from 928 Int'l when I needed replacements.

Yea I figured that one out as soon as I saw it pulling the cover. I'm okay with that. Maybe I can route it behind the belt when I button everything back up.

In the meantime if anyone is reading this and has a used set of cam gears, please let me know. Not sure if I only need to replace the driver one or do both at the same time.

Andy

Route the wiring the same way it was when you found it. Disconnect the feeder to the ABS terminal forward of the PS reservoir, unplug the 14-pin. There's a clamp on the front left lift bracket. Take a picture of that routing and clamp there so OK can get it back as it was. Fudging the routing at that bracket and clamp can cause erratic Hall sensor operation, I've discovered.

Get new gears for both sides. One is obviously toast already, the other is too close behind. That shiny one is to far gone to recoat at this point. Used ones are getting scarce, with new costs escalating.

Sad truth: people drive new cars because they can't (or don't want to) afford older cars.

Gears are still cheaper than a couple months of payments on your $73k super car.

Yea that's true, but this $73K supercar was $10k when we bought it in 01. I suppose 4% of it's value isn't too bad compared to a new engine, God forbid I have to go through that ****. In the meantime I'm going to Bombay with some tonic water and lime juice tonight in my living room. I don't want to touch that car tonight until I cool off.
