Default Annoying Seat Switch

On my 1982... I had all of the power seat switches working. They are the "antique" ones with the 2 ***** and metal pieces inside of them.

Today, on the passenger seat, the one that slides the seat bottom forward/backward stopped working. I tried the button in other holes and all of the buttons work. I also tried other working buttons for this function and no button will work for that one. Any suggestions which part might be the likely culprit? This is very annoying.

I tried 2 other working switches, so it is not the switch. :-(

Same on mine. The up and down worked but the forward and back didn't till I replaced the switch. The issue was something with the ***** and the metal piece. The new switch came with these so I just replaced that part ... not the whole switch. Still may not be the same problem but just in case....
Hope you get it fixed. You probably know that you can use an allen wrench to move the seat forward and back. If you don't move it much...it's at least an option.

Something jammed in the rails? (take a look and/or try manually cranking)... or the motor died, flex drive shaft came off motor or a wiring issue...

Is it positioned so you can remove it (raise it up as high as possible). If so easier to diagnose out of the car.

It raises and lowers, and the seat back goes forward and back. Those working switches do not work if i swap them for the seat bottom and vice versa. I see nothing blocking the rails either. If there is one motor for all the functions, that definitely works.

Where do you move the seat with an allen wrench?

I had similar issues. Bought a can of deoxyit and sprayed into the switch and problem solved. Easiest fix ever.

The allen wrench hole is under the front of the seat, a little right of center. There's a plastic cover (2 screws to remove) that covers the motors and stuff. You don't have to remove the cover to get to the allen bolt (6mm BTW), but taking the cover off lets you see more of what's under there. You can take off the drive cables and access the motor power terminals. I had to pop the cables off mine.

There are 3 motors under the front of the seat. Each switch function has it's own motor. The forward/back is the middle motor.

And like Alan said, if you can get the seat out, it's a lot easier to work on.
You have to move it all the way back to get at the 2 front bolts, and all the way forward to get to the 4 back bolts. Be careful with the 2 fronts, the backing plate isn't attached and if you drop it you have to go fishing. A small hook tool and a hemostat is useful for that (Guess how I learned that )

My 79 does the same thing. I had the seats out to recover and cleaned all the rails.

There is a switch on the seat back flip forward hinge mechanism that should automatically move the seat forward when the seat back is tilted forward for rear seat access.

I can tilt my seat back forward and occassionally it is immediate some times it is delayed but the seat does motor forward. Once forward the seat switch won't motor the seat back. I have to use the manual process.

Seems like mid travel once the seat motor works it will work both directions. Anybody had issues with the seat tilt forward switch affecting rest of circuitry?

I don't remember now whether there are limit switches fior fore and aft travel that might be at issue or are they hard stops? Relay perhaps?

I do not see the 6mm allen hole. I did disconnect some stuff and use deoxyit. The seat bottom still doesnt move. I did find some of the previous owners garbage under there, including a few shotgun shells, one unshot. Interesting car to take hunting....

Oh my. That is completely different than my 85 with the 8 ways.
I figured there would be some difference, but not that much.

The Owner's Manual for the 82 says that there's a manual release for the power seats.
If you don't have one, there's a link in the "Read This First" sticky for OMs for most years.

And yes, most of the threads about seat rehab mention the treasure trove and archeological finds that are under there. I found two "Triborough Bridge Authority" toll tokens, along with a bunch of change, a few pens, some garbage and enough broken bits of glass to indicate that the passenger window isn't original.
