Gas smell finally solved
After doing all the recommended checks and rechecks related to gas smell and living in fear of being a motorized molotov cocktail, I finally fixed the odor problem that was prominent around the gas filler door and to some extent smell inside the car. Another thank you to the P.O. who ever it was.
1) The gas cap had no rubber gasket - FIXED 928 201 275 03 Gas Gap Seal $7.81
2) Cap for Gas Tank Access at Rear deck - Cap 1 928 504 207 02 $6.09
Yippee!

The gas-cap gasket actually fits around the neck of the tank, and not in the cap itself - it has a small lip which folds when the cap is screwed onto the tank, creating the seal.
They're hard to see, as they've usually become compressed with 25 years of pressure and chemicals. I replaced them on both of my 928's about 3 months ago and in both cases it cured the smell of gas/petrol
