Default New project : door question

Hi guys!

I'm considering a '81 S project car, with some body injuries.

I would have to change some parts, including the passenger door.

Question : are all MY doors compatible?
I've heard somewhere that any door wouldn't fit any car, because of a change of the hinges mounting points, at some point, but I can't find the data.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,

Michel

After digging in the PET, looks like door shell references are changing since MY '83 (MY '87 & MY '92 too but slightly) .

Any of you can confirm please that the hinges mounting locations won't be a problem in case of swap?

Thanks!

Cheers,

Michel

I believe the change was for the later speaker set-up, which needed more room. I'm not sure, if there are any other changes; e.g. the steel reinforcement bars that at least the early Euro 928s supposedly don't have.

Thanks a lot Nicole!

Not sure to jump into this new project, but if I do, I'll tell you about the doors

I'm surprise that no one else could tell me about this particular spot, but may be this is so obvious that I don't deserve an answer

Or may be I'm to impatient!

Cheers,

Michel

Default doors

The doors are compatable between 1979 -1986 cars. I worked in Spartanburg for a dismantler and removed and replaced several doors between years with no problems. I did see differences between the speaker mounting locations but everything else was the same.

One thing that you might find if and when you fit a replacement door to your 928 is that the gaps are not exactly correct. If you find that the front gap is wider than the rear gap or perhaps the door is sagging very slightly, I have fashioned a bunch of shims in varying thicknesses of aviation sheet aluminum that I had around here some time ago, and I can send you a few to try to get the gaps correct.

However, if the front gap is too narrow, the shims will not help since they only move the door foreward at one or both hinge points.

The shims are free for the asking.

Thanks a lot for your help!

That's what I was looking for, Donald, I know where to head for my search now!

I guess I know what kind of shims you're talking about, the very same kind are fitting the hood hinges for a better adjustment, factory design.

I appreciate your offer for the shims, Jerry, I'll let you know when the beast is in my garage

Cheers,

Michel
