On long hauls I have my left wrist resting on my thigh and two fingers of that hand on the wheel. The right does nothing but diddle the radio controls.

why is it taller? Is there padding on top of the lid, or is it a different lid?

Its also worth noting that Peter also sells a rather natty horn pad thats a replacement for the stock pad on the early 3-spoke 928 steering wheel. A few Aussies have it and its got good feedback.
