Anyone have a cluster for an 82 to 84? Or at least parts of one? My ribbon is on its last leg and I need one of the oval black plastic gauge jumpers. I lost mine somehow. Will pay! Thanks, Bill.
the two pronged little things that go in to the gauge?
Yes, I can't figure out why I lost one but I did. Also was wondering on the 21 pin connector what is color code for #1 and #2 wires, trying to solve a charging problem where everything seems correct along with new alt and battery.
You may want to check with Kiln Red on this forum. I know he recently mentioned having a few clusters laying around his shop. He can also be reached at the other 928 site.
The gauge reads corrrectly, it reads around 10 volts when the lights and blower are on sitting at a light. I checked with a volt meter to the cigarette lighter and read the same as the dash gauge did. At idle with no accessories on it charges normally. There is good continuity from the exciter wire at alternator to 21 pin connector. I replaced the battery around a month ago but i have had several failed alternators which seem to go out while driving at night with the lights on. I decided to check the cluster to see if it had the proper alt light bulb and resistor. The parts are correct and the light operates. I cleaned the connections once again at the starter, removed the heat shrink from ground strap, sandblasted it and put new shrink on. Ran through every ground point I know of etc. By the way, almost forgot, its an 84 us model.
How's the headlight grounds up front by the headlight bar? Engine ground ok? The cable on the batt ground can look ok, but the lead crimp area can get corrosion you can't really see. Ron Edwards had a nice write up on that
Just a warning, '82 clusters and working components are getting more scarce. I know of only one circuit board left new and I couldn't talk the owner out of it to save my life last week. If you get extras keep a hand on them because you just might need them.
Engine block ground is good, I did however forget to check headlight ground. Probably a good place to start. Does anyone remember the thread where someone replaced the gauge cluster ribbon with wires?
