DrNick....I see what you're saying but I would add that my car has a bit of oversize tires now and the top lip is rubbing. I have a damaged quarter so I'm going to attempt the project and if it doesn't work I will replace the quarter.

Hello Chris,
1. Please describe how you will make this cut, not the shape but the method.
What you're doing is a real old school hot-rodder thing.
Are you a a body work guy? The thing with cutting is once done that's it you cannot type ctrl z. Your car's value will drop big time.
I have always modified my Porsches but not ever like this so for me to say put the brakes on is saying a lot.
I like the 930 looking rear round fender arch approach best if you have to chop, at least it is a factory made aesthetic decision. It will still affect value but less imo.
I am impressed though with your determnation. cool thread.
BTW i deleted my rear wiper, antennae and wing so i am a bit of a hypocrite i know..
Matt

If you really want to try this - maybe you could buy a beaten up roller - gives you a means to practice with no real downside to perfect technique and a way to evaluate how it will look....'
Otherwise as others have said tough to go back... or do it over for better results...

I know exactly what you guys are saying but it's a $1200 car nobody wanted for 6 months it was for sale without so much as a single taker. Crying shame considering it is a running/driving '80 S 300 horse. It's been horribly taken care of I might add. I've already fixed things that should have been done to it years ago.
My thinking is not so much old school hot rodding as functionality. I actually want to preserve the original contours, not altar them. All I will be doing is removing a narrow band of flat quarter metal ABOVE the lip. Will it destroy the value? Sure but it could always be re-quartered. I have done enough paint/body to do this job I'm just REAL nervous about it. I can tell you I've done oodles of paintshop adjustments to those quarters and almost every car I change appears to be more in balance. The lines improve to my eyes. People in general think of the rear glass as PACER and ugly and part of that is, I believe, because the rear wheelwells are dropped out of balance with the front wells. Go back and look at the pics I posted and judge for yourself. One other point is that it seems many 928 owners are running shorter rear tires than on the front, no? Take a look at the blue 928 before and after pics I posted here. It's quite obvious what the difference is.
Oh and Matt...I like mods too but as long as they are tasteful. I can't tell you how ugly some of the rear spoilers and even front spoilers I've seen added to these cars are to me. Ugly as sin. A car that is balanced out a bit more is appealing to me. Not trying to hurt anyones feelings it's just MY opinion, that's all. If someone is happy with their mods and saving a car I'm pleased. Too many of these cars have been parted/junked IMO.

This is just my opinion, but i think you should just wait and think on it for a long while.
As you get more tuned in to 928s you will change your mind and not want to cut it. I say this because you sound like a smart guy.
Old Porsche design is subtle and it lasts for a reason. Porsche always considered function as much as styling,
true Engineers at heart get it.
The rear quarter glass serves a purpose, all the structure needed is there
that is the shape.
It grows on you rather than blow your mind from the get-go like a new Beemer, which usually look very bad in 10 years.
Think on it, read about the design and look at your new car from different angles, forget what nit-wits say about the pacer..

Matt....I hear you. I DO have reservations about cutting into it. Maybe I will chicken out. LOL. I know the design is unique and I am nervous about messing with it. I do, however, want to run taller/wider tires and rolling the wells just might not work. I'm on the fence over the whole thing. I probably need to just find a junked out non-repairable car to try it on. I wonder who's got one?????

PO installed them on turbo twists. (see my avatar). They run top center of the lip. I like the wider tire look but not the rubbing. Since I'm fairly new to the car perhaps there is a way to just lift the rear an inch or two????
