I was within two feet of being rear ended today.
I had been sitting at the red light of a major intersection for at least a minute or longer. Out of no where, I hear screeching, and I look into my rear view mirror to see a guy swerve around me without even a car length to spare. I was able to clearly see his face and watch his car pitch, yaw, and roll while he sought to maintain control.
He nearly sideswiped another guy in the process of swerving into the next lane to the right.
I could somewhat understand had I made an unexpected hard stop, but it just didn't make any sense why he had to be going at least twenty or thirty coming up to my car while I was sitting with my brakes depressed.
The red light has probably six lanes counting the two left and single right turn lanes. The funny thing is that only the left most through lane was packed. The other two through lanes might have well have been deserted.
Ugh.

You were lucky. I got rear ended last March, totaled my 87, and it was a damn nice car too. But a RL'r got the engine and it lives on.

About 6 years ago I was the one that did the "rear-ending!"
Lady and her Mom sitting at red light. I wasn't paying attention enough and looked over at something on my passenger seat. Looked up just in time to slam on the brakes. Not soon enough though. I was probably going about 25 or so and the brakes did slow me down some. No one hurt (I thought) until almost 2 years later I get sued for a 1 million dollars. Yikes!
BTW, I was driving my DD Dodge Dakota.
After about a year, the older lady settled with my insurance company for 27K.

Two weeks ago, my son was rear ended by an off duty cop. The twist is that he was on his bicycle waiting for the light to turn green. No broken bones, but he's dealing with stiffness and pain.
I suspect cell phone use, whether texting, hands free talking or handheld talking is to blame in many of these cases.

I'm convinced that the 928 is much safer in motion than stopped.
In the time I've been on here I've heard this so many times that I have started to pump my brakes to flash the lights every time I'm at a light.
I think there are two scenarios at work here:
1. You've been at the light for a long time and 99% of the people on the road now have SUVs and when they drive up to the light they literally are overlooking your car. They see the rest of the intersection and just don't look down and see your car there. (while texting, talking on the phone, applying makeup, reading the paper...whatever).
2. You are just coming up to a light and decide you don't want to chance it so you stop a little more abruptly than normal. You apply the brakes and since the 928 is so well balanced and low, it doesn't 'nose-dive' forward and then rock back like many passenger cars do so the guy/gal behind you doesn't realize you've already stopped and keeps driving until they realize they're too close, at which time you're going to get hit.
I always pump my brake lights and I can actually see people notice it and brake or turn (if I'm just turning left) and sometimes it's bloody scary to see how far ahead people actually look when they drive.
On the upside, it got me used to driving in my rear view mirror so when I went up to Watkins Glen for a DE guys like Ed S and Mike and the other 928 guys didn't run me over.

In any manual car, i like to see how little i can use the brakes, and sometimes it's fun to be slowing down making people think your brake lights don't work, or at least that's what you think they're thinking. I always slow down like a big truck does to keep momentum when i see red lights coming up. Does wonders for gas mileage too. However, when my Dad does that in the States in Florida, he gets rednecks in trucks, and SUV's horning him and giving him the finger for doing that. Tsk tsk tsk... whats the rush.

I hate it when people involve me in their little driving games. Drive up to the light and stop. Creeping up saves no real gas. It doesn't. Most energy goes to rolling resistance and wind resistance. The energy stored at 5MPH and less is negligible.
Ya wanna save gas then take 5 MPH off your highway speed. Or 10. And stay to the right when you do it.

Yeah and what 17 doesn't seem to realize is that clutches cost waaay more than brakes. They are also a lot more difficult to change than pads. But I think he's in it for the fun.
Here's my tale of woe. Well not really woe, just use the info as you will. Last summer in a Traverse (Chevy SUV) against my will from Budget, I was in construction zone. Flagman gave a late signal to stop, but, no problem, I decided not to try and outrun the large earthmover crossing my path. 5 or 8 seconds later I'm rear ended by a Toyota s10. He was watching "the big tractor" and got his front totaled for his inattention. I had a small dent and broken license plate light. BUT, does anyone pay the $24/day insurance the rental company tries to make you take???? Well, I never have and I never will. I also didn't feel the need to sue when I'm not injured. You will usu find an insurance card in the glove box, b/c they are not letting you drive uninsured, but they do want to extract as much $$ as they can. I used AmEx on the rental so they covered it. EXCEPT for the part they didn't; they denied Budget's $100 "Administrative fee" and the loss of service days while it is being fixed. Budget would not or could not provide usage logs so AmEx denied the loss of usage fee as unsubstantiated, (sort of makes sense, no receipt no reimbursement) and the admin is a BS arbitrary charge "Not in the usual course of business" Budget is still dunning me. I am still ignoring them.

2 years ago I got rear ended hard in my 911 with fiberglass IROC bumpers sitting at a stop light. I fixed it and was hit again by a pizza delivery guy about a month later.
First one that hit me at light (She) got out of her Honda minivan with her thumb still on her cell phone.
I have a theory that our old cars get hit because they are lower and smaller and aren't noticed.
Ever notice how many old Signal Orange VWs managed to survive?
Dark grey and Silver are the worst colors in terms of being seen because they blend with the pavement from a distance.
