Default 88, 928s4... door handle does not work...

Hello, my driverside exterior door handle does not open the door anymore, I have to go in through the passenger door to and open the driver door form the inside...I read another thread here, I looked at the procedure and it looks like a pain the ****...I have taken the door apart before to change out the window motor and that sucked...

Question: How much would it cost to take it to a Porsche mechanic that charges 80$ per hour...? 3-4 hours...?

thank you,

Sniper

Frankly if you have a few hours and work slowly you can do this job yourself.

Here is a link with some pictures

Basic instructions...Roger has new door handle mechanisms.

remove the door panel,
put window down,

put window up,
if the handle is good IE no snapped off tang tape it into position on the door with blue tape
Remove the door handle mechanism,
install new mechanism
lubricate the interior door latch with oil
install the security plate ,
put window down install remaining hardware,

I did mine for the first time in less than two hours, but I have no idea what they might take. It wasn't a lot of fun. ;-)

Do it yourself. The part costs about $30 or so. I did it in 3 hours and one hour of that was re-assembly which took longer than usual because we started late and it was dark out already and getting cold.

Some say the security plate is the hardest part to get out and re-install. Beginner's luck for me I guess because it seemed to be the easiest. If you have big hands, this job will be harder because you have to get into some small spaces.

I had a similar issue many years ago. After exploring having a shop do it I realized the labor hours can add up fast and I didn't get a sense anyone there was particularly knowledgable on what the problem was.
I would tackle this one as a DIY project. It takes some dexterity and patience, but is worth it. This way you don't have to worry about someone rushing thru the job, bungling things and damaging your interior trim.

Cool thanks for the positive push, I have done the power window motor myself (and that was not fun ; )...I will give it a shot, at worst I can always take it the mech after I dissasemble the door and get a discount for doing half the work LOL...!

thanks...sniper

Its not so bad... just time consuming and a bit frustrating. If you've already had the door trim off you have a headstart, you will remember most of it... Load up on supplies like the trim clips - they will break and if you don't have replacements you will end up going in again.

Do get the right tools - I used a mini ratchet with socket & allen heads - much easier than an allen key (must be real mini though) use blue masking tape, get an upholstery pry tool. If you are going to re-glue the existing moisture barrier get some suitable glue.

I have an electric screwdriver with a 90 degree attachment (that was too big), I have a 45 degree cranked hex handle driver (even that was too big)... those tools would have been sweet vs ratcheting one click at a time

Still I used the project to do a bunch of other stuff on the door at the same time....
So if you are thinking about speakers or inner door handle reinforcements now is a good time...

Alan
