Help. Weird sound with new Porken tensioner (UPDATED WITH VIDEO OF NOISE)
I have just put my motor back together after replacing the original tensioner with a Porken version along with a new gates timing belt. Did not do the water pump since it has about 2K miles on it.
Once I got it back together and started it, I am hearing a noise from the front passengers side that sounds like an exhaust leak. I actually thought it was my new "used" air pump i just got....but took the belt off and the sound it still there.
I used my stethoscope all over the engine and when I stuck it thru the center front cover to the tensioner and I believe that is were the sound is coming from. The tensioner itself (Audi version) is not making the noise....but when I touch the lever that the tensioner pushes against the pulley (that the belt rides on), I think that is were the sound is coming from. I just cant understand how the noise I hear is coming from metal.....
My question is...before I tear the front of the motor back off: Have others noticed a different sound once a Porken tensioner was installed? For many of you...you are always listening and know when a new noise shows up in your car. I don't think its normal....but...it does not cost anything to ask. The belt is riding fine on both cam sprockets. Everything measured within spec with the install and appeared to track very well.
Thanks
Jeff

Did the Audi lever and pulley both have two sets of washers included?
One for each side?
One for each side?

I only remember two washer for the pulley...but on the other hand...I found nothing missing when using the instructions. I will pull it back apart and check.

Sorry, that was unclear - two washers each.
Also, did the pulley move freely when it was torqued down?
IE. the pin was not dragging on the bracket?

I noticed a different sound after my PorKensioner was installed. It's almost like a whistle you would hear from turbos. Greg Nettles (RIP) installed mine and I asked him about it. He said he didn't know what it was from from he always heard it after installing them (he had done a number, including one on his own car).

Missing washer(from the back of the pulley) is my bet. Here's my experience with that:

I have never heard an odd sound after installing one. Very odd.

I tore the front down and can not find anything wrong. Washers are on both sides of the lever and I know there is one on both sides of the pulley. There is no sign of rubbing or metal flakes. Heck...I may have an exhaust leak on the first cylinder which just happen to sit right behind the tensioner. I was just thinking that it may have been loudest right when I started the motor then got a little quieter once the motor got hotter.
I am at the point that I am going to put it together and drive it like a rental. If it stays together, I continue with the restore if not, I am done.

Even if it's 'new', do check the waterpump.
Check the pulley for:
- leakage
- no migration, in or out
- no movement, up or down, side to side
- should have a slight drag when spinning, not too fast
- should not be notchy or hard to turn

I have noted a supercharger like whine when accelerating after changing from a stock tensioner to a PKT.
No difference at low rpm/load or idle, though.
