Hi Gang. It has been a pretty hectic fall.
I put the car up for the winter, and had intended on being mostly done with my intended projects. But time slipped away. Haven't driven her in a month..
So, I was looking to do M/M, pan gasket, oil hoses, power steering rebuild.
Then i thought i would do the Intake refresh and T/B, WP jobs too.
Car has about 170k Runs Great. Belt was inspected beginning last year..looked great. gears a little shinny. Has been y every other day driver for last 18 months. Last belt change unknown, but reported to be at 150k...
I kinda feel like i am pressing my luck by not doing the belt yesterday!!
So, should i just pull the engine and do all those and leave the intake for later?
Or, M/M, gasket...then TB/WP, and steering and Intake when i get to it.
Or...just do the TB/WP with engine in. ...
Would it just be better to pull the engine and do everything, and just expect to be off the road for a year?//
You can do these jobs in sequence and get some time to enjoy your car in between. Do the TB/WP first as it makes for a very expensive engine repair if it lets go while running. As part of that same job replace your fuel lines. You don't want to BBQ your ride. Then address the PS system as the trans fluid used is also flammable and can start a fire if it springs a leak. Then replace all the trans fluid cooling hoses. Again, this is a fire prevention job Once these are done you can take care of the MM/OPG. I wouldn't pull the engine to do any of this as there is no need. It can all be done with the engine in place.
Lots of stuff to do with the motor out. Its not an easy job the first time around but when its out it is worth it. Everything you are talking of doing is easier with a motor in front of you and being able to stand in the engine bay but you dont have to pull it.
I pulled mine to do all that stuff but more so to clean 25yrs of baked on oil and crap around the engine. I hated the smell of hot baked on burnt oil when i shut down in the garage.
You'll be happier pulling the engine. The opportunity to do additional work is big then. Seals and gaskets aplenty. Take a month or two and get it all done.
I got this car just over 2 years ago. First thing i did was change the fuel lines.
i had the tranny lines re manufactured. fluids changed, plugs, retensioned belt, Cam tension pads, oil block pins..torque shaft bearing, flex plate relax..
and i did the cat bypass.
So, aside from the unknow timing belt..i am pretty comfortable with the safety issues.
I really want to clean it up in the bay...cam oil leaks and power steering have it nasty..
i think i may do a compression test first tho..if i see a big difference or low. i may rethink putting time or more $ into it..has there been any further development on reasonable cam gears?
