Remote Hatch Release Questions

1) When you pull the **** next to the seat, do you only need to pull it and it makes a full cycle on its own, or do you have to hold it to go through a whole cycle? I'm guessing the first, and in that case what needs replacing?
2) The remote release hasn't unlatched the hatch since it got below 40 degrees. The key doesn't work in the lock, so that was my only way in. The carrier/plastic thingy inside the latch was intact as far as I knew. When I pull the ****, it just cycles through, and maybe struggles a bit at one point. Any ideas as to how to fix?
And as always, thanks

At least your motor is running, but the striker attached to hatch door is not being released.
Try adjusting height of the receiver mechanism (two bolts moving in slotted holes, access by removing tool tray).
If that doesn't do it, try shimming forward the release mechanism, by pushing one or more pieces of thin plastic behind rubber oblong shaped cup that lines the receiver aperture. I used piece from milk carton on my previous car and it fixed the problem permanently.

Guess I'm about to state the bleedin' obvious but I imagine you've checked the 1 amp black fuse #26?
Isn't this responsible for the full cycle of the tailgate release mechanism?
Apparently another common cause is that the mechanism is installed the wrong way around.

Yes - the 1A fuse but on an '84 its down by the hatch release in an inline holder...
If it worked a little while ago - and everything else looks good (no cracks etc) - I'd add zip ties around the actuator cam (see other posts) and see if that helps. You may also have some success just moving the motor up/down on the support/mounting bar (loosen the 2 bolts and slide).
First you have to get in - remove the tool tray - remove the motor - disconnect the cam actuator and activate it manually with a pair of pliers - or snake a narrow screwdriver in to directly push on the white tounge release (look at diagrams/photos).
