The good ones (w/original paint and the like) come up so rarely, I've changed my search criteria. Instead of mananging to the 10th pecentile, I've opened up to all relatively complete cars, no serious damage, running preferred. Also, if I consider each one needs paint, mech. and interior, then my expectations are simple. Even with this simple criteria, finding relatively complete cars are hard to find (esp. low VIN 78's that appeal to me).

EDIT: Oh yea, and clear title too. It's amazing to me, in my searches, how hard it is to find and early car that meets these 3 criteria (relatively complete, no serious damage & clean title)

I drove by this car yesterday on the way to OBX. Did a u- turn for a closer look. Sad to see, seems to be saying "someone take me home and make me nice again". Looks complete, straight, but very tired. Showed about 145k on the clock.

I should go take a look at it...

I'm looking for a short-term resto candidate (for the fall/winter).

Anyone have contact info and/or location?

Definitely worth saving as a driver.
I have a 79 in similar condition that I am slowly bringing back from the dead - such fun to work on and great engineering. NOT A PARTS CAR - for Gods sake it runs what more do you want.
Great color and Pascha interior. Easily worth $1000.
Go get it Jim.

Thanks guys!

I need a complete clean-title car... that needs a repaint (so I can continue to work with Kevin Michael at Neune Werke),
restore the interior (with Bob Budd at Classic9 Leathershop), drop in my Euro Hybrid 5.0L,
upgrade the transmission w/diff gearsets and LSD, install my modern 18" Phone Dials.

Within a $25K budget (my labor excluded).

The car will be hot!

If anyone has a car that would make for a great donor to the project, feel free to drop me a line.
'78 Euro/RoW preferred, '79 Euro/RoW will consider
Doesn't need to run. Interior color doesn't matter.

If anyone is interested in being a part of this project, I'm always looking for a patron.

Thanks!

The nice thing about having a hobby car that is not rare is that you can feel free to do anything you want with it. -screw original. I have owned a 29 ford tudor since 1954 and, over the years rebuilt everything mechanically. Originally I was going to do all the stock resto stuff. Screw that. I'll do my own interior and paint colors. Bob Bean, 79, 5sp, petrol bl/tan, new bridgestones

You know it... that is why I'm looking for a mid-VIN, mid-year car... nothing super early.

Also, part of the reason for "custom" on this one is because I want to have fun with it.
As I continue to prep for "full restoration", I want to feel free to take liberties at this point.
And I can use this project to continue developing good habits and organization that will apply later on.

Don't get me wrong, the car will be chocked full of good 'ole fashioned Porsche DNA... thru and thru.

It will be a show car and a ripper!

If it is the same car, the guy wanted $4500.00 for it. I saw it parked at a transmission shop. Car is white. Owners name is Jamie. PM for phone number.

Eric - it's the same car. Here are some pics I took last Saturday. I couldn't take too much time - family had already been in the car for 10 hours....

It needs just about everything, but looks straight and complete.

"" I'd almost bet more 79's are under tarps than on the road.""

Easy now....I resemble that remark.

Checked out the car today, but had to pass on it.

It's a decent car, just needs a cash infusion to set it right... more than I can put into a another car at this point (if it was a client car restoration, it'd be perfect!)

Jamie, the seller, was an all right guy. Based on our conversation, he's just going to continue to drive the car as it is, and enjoy it. I think that's the best option this car has now.

This will be the kind of early car we will look back on and wish we could've bought. Someday, it'll be very difficult to find them even in this condition, intact for the most part.

Neat thing about the car is it's a factory non-AC with a sunroof. Interesting combination.
Also, I like the USDOT corner marker treatments as well. Best execution of them I've seen.

Best part about the trip with running the silver '78 Euro, #579. It will have a new owner soon, so I'm enjoying it while I still can. Great car!

Lastly, I was able to pick a couple super rare items from the '79... 2 original Beru spark plugs, and an orignal glove bag... $20! (plus gas)

Who in their right mind would drive a car around the mid-South without A/C?

Wow, that white car looks so much better than when I saw it last summer - amazing what a good cleaning can do.
