Default Oil pressure pins/connecter 87s4

What pin out on the 14pin connecter on the jump terminal is for the oil pressure?

How about in the dash/pod itself?

I'm basically determining if i have continuity between the sender and the gauge.

Im sitting here opening up the wiring diagrams also..but thought Id ask as well for the sake of future reference for others.

I have a spare gauge, is it possible to "simulate" a signal to the gauge and have it function.

I have never got a good answer on how it works. Ive hooked 9v to it and it does nothing...if i then touch the needle and ever so slightly move it, it jumps to full "pegged"...same occurs with a 1.5v battery.

So how does it work?

Hello Tony

I can look for the pin connections , dont know of the top of my head, but I log the output of the sender to check for relevent oil pressure, whilst it is in the Dyno , however , found interesting observations , the signal is at 5 volts , for 5 bar gauge indication , (full scale ) it does not exceed this , so the factory was obviously not concerned about any excess pressure after this amount .
Even though you have 12 volts at the gauge , it is biased so that it never exceeds 5 volts to the dash gauge indication .

Thanks..appreciate that.

im going to try and hook my volt meter to the feeds to the guage itself and see what i get.

So it is 5 volts then.

Hello Tony

It is 5 volts from the oil sender on the engine to the dash gauge , One of the other wires is 12 volts , I am assuming the other is ground return , I am also assuming that the sender is some sort of voltage divider .
Note as I siad you will only see a maximum of volts at full gauge oil pressure .

actually i just traced the wires on the diagrams...going out in a bit to check and see if it all has continuity..voltage

wires on the oil pressure sender goes to...

pins 2 and 4 on the 14pin conector on the Jumpstart terminal....

Pin 2 from here goes to Pin 24 on the black plug of the bulbcheck module (i assume that is the Low oil pressure light check/circuit)

Pin14 goes to the dash/pod at Pin 11 and leads to the actual gauge itself.

Everything has continuity but.....
Searching on some other froums... MB...BMW...DSM
common error there is the signal wire is shorted to ground. (which is why people commonly say switch the wire leads on the terminal)....i did that but at the 14pin connector instead, it was easier to get at then the sender under the car. Still didnt work.

I think i have a shorted signal wire to ground.

I will be checking that when i get home...
1)between the sender the 14pin connector.
2)the 14pin connector and the gauge itself.

I will also run a new signal wire as part of a test directly from the sender to the gauge.

I can smell victory damn it!
