I'm just waiting for the day when we up our expenditures on the interstate system, up it to three lanes, and raise the speed limit to something like 100. I would be happy if we were allowed to travel at 100 when the weather was nice. 65 in Wisco is just agonizingly slow. I mean, I drove down to Chicago once when I went abroad - 5 hours. I took a plane ride from chicago to minneapolis on return - less than an hour. Shows how tiny this planet is but also how useless it is to use the road system for anything but short commutes, if you follow the rules.

I saw the private viewing last fall in Charlotte (CAFE) with Cory present. It was a great movie that everyone here would enjoy.

Got DVD today. Lots of good press for 928 in it. At least three or four different cars shown. One has spacesaver spare replacing Gotti wheel. Wonder how long they had to run with it. On one 928 they had fuel cell which in theory at least would allow NY to LA with only two fuel stops. Ferrari 308 won, they came second.

I seem to recall a coast to coast (NYC to LA) record being set, sometime in the 70's by a fool in a Mini-Cooper...he averaged right at 100 mph coast to coast and did it in like 30 hrs and 7 minutes. It was a one car effort, IIRC, and was written up in RT or Car and Driver, or some other reasonably astute publication. The advantage of the Cooper was it was pretty much invisible at speed, had a top end of maybe 120mph, but was unlike the real high performance stuff that would blow by at 180mph and get into a speed trap or push the car until it breaks. The Cooper just kept on going..

I also recall getting into one of the Cannonball (or similar) runs in the 70's or very early 80's while driving across I 70 in Indiana, west of Indianapolis. I was driving along at my usual rate, perhaps a bit over the posted rate, along with other traffic. Suddenly a Cobra goes blasting by in the break down lane, at some phenomenal speed, certainly well over 100mph, more like 120+, maybe 150...while I was thinking WTF a Ferrari goes by in the fast lane at a similar speed....most uncommon occurrence in the flatlands, neither a Cobra or a Ferrari were often seen....more likely to over take a manure spreader going 35mph. A couple of days later I see in the NYT that so and so "won the illegal Cannonball coast to coast with a time of XX hours" so I then suspected I had seen the real thing

Showed up in yesterday’s mail. Definitely entertaining and worth watching.

And it came with Cory's autograph.

After the last Cannonball, Rick Doherty, a veteran of the 1975 and 1979 races, organized a successor, the U.S. Express. Doherty won the first U.S. Express with co-driver and famous game designer, Will Wright,[1] at the wheel of a Mazda RX-7. Their time was 33 hours, 9 minutes. The U.S. Express ran to the Beach in Santa Monica, making it longer than the Cannonball. Despite the increased length, the fastest time recorded was 32 hours 7 minutes, in the 1983 race, 44 minutes faster than the fastest Cannonball, and the "official" cross-country record until it was broken in 2006. 1983 was the last year of the U.S. Express.

In 1981 the US Express ran from Long Island, New York to Emeryville, California (bordering Oakland, California at the east end of the Bay Bridge). Interstate 80 was largely the route of choice. The winning team in 1981 were the first time Express team of David Morse and Steve Clausman driving David’s gray Porsche 928. One unique road hazard experienced in the 1981 run was an early snowfall closing the Donner Pass for several hours to vehicles without chains just as the US Express cars were approaching. The Porsche 928 carried special plastic chains and was able to proceed while others had to wait for the pass to open. The team of David Morse and Steve Clausman competed the next 2 years. In 1982 (also to Emeryville) where they survived after several memorable police stops and the final US Express run in 1983 to Newport Beach where they placed “2nd” in what some consider a controversial finish.

Me and dad made the run in 1979 (from LA to Salisbury, NC) with a governed u-haul....halfway, dad pulled the governor. We made it in a week! We unloaded our crap in a mini storage, I flew to Miami, dad flew back to LA to do it all over again in a Winnebago with mom and my baby bro!

We then did a round trip in 82 with family in a custom van....3days each way...

That's my Cannonball adventure....

Default New record crossing

Saw this today: 3 gentlemen from Atlanta just killed the previous record.
28 hours 50 minutes 30 seconds
Average speed while moving 100 mph
Overall average speed 98 mph
Top speed 158 mph

Amazing how everything seemed to fall into place. Details here:

That's how these things go. The first one is set, then that record gets crushed by someone, then it falls away in smaller and smaller increments. Eventually, it can't be broken, but wjo knows where the limit is. Also, technology is the key.
I couldn't have been more wrong on most of the points made. Ave speed damn near 100; smashed Alex's record by nearly 2 HOURS! Remarkable:bowdown ::bowdown ::bowdown :

Technology is the key and I had none on my Solo "Cannonball" in 1971 from Chicago to San Francisco, just my Hi-Tech 914-4.

My ODO showed 2300+ and I made it in 28 1/2 hours with 5 or 6 stops including one where it just shut off completely but started up after 15 minutes.

Oh, and no bedpan.
