Jim, you'll be the 'bad-***' of the month in the second issue.

Thanks for the unconditional help and inspiration, you've got the cojones to make this thing work.

If you need any kinda help, I'm a phone call away...

Good that some recognize early 928s as collector cars. I cringe when I see later models used as daily drivers/beaters for the hot dogger types. Get a crappy Camaro or Mustang for the juvenile activities.
My (stock) 29 model A Ford will go 70 mph but the last time I did that with it was 53 years ago.
Went fast once with my 79 928. -good enough for me.

A quick update...
928 Classics is moving to Michigan to Doerr Farms. We'll be scaling back some, and a few cars will be coming up for sale within the upcoming months.
A lot of action is happening and will continue before the transition and the Fall afterward.
We appreciate all your support and patience as we make the move back home. Thanks again for your support!

Hi Jim, looking back the three years since you announced this endeavor, has it gone as expected? Do you feel there is growth in this market, enough to justify new shops like yours opening up? Anything you would do differently? Your unique insight into the market for these cars is invaluable.

Good luck with the transition, Jim.

Looks like we will be neighbors. Kind of been wondering what was happening, kept checking your site for the double hood liner needed for the 78...thought l'd put a new one in incase l took old red to Sharks in Hell...and I couldn't find it. Will you continue to sell 78 items when you get settled in?

Hope your move goes well and if there is anything I can do to help...please let me know.

Brian.

Welcome back home Jim. Now you'll only be 20 minutes away (if you're driving the tractor) 10 minutes in your 928.

Jim, this is great to hear! I will now be able to visit you and would like to as I am still on my search for the right car.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone for the kind words and wishes!

This is a tough one to answer because there's so many facets to it. The demand for the early 928 was expected (anticipated), the demand and its affect on my time was not. Business growth exceeded my expectations! As much as I tried to keep things small, that proved very difficult. Managing growth became another job. Finding good & trustworthy workers in Richmond VA fell way short. I didn't expect to be going at this alone at this stage of the game.
Working on 39-40 year old early 928s takes a tremendous amount of time get things right. I expected this to a certain degree, but the amount of gross time was underestimated. For example, to repair a very rare ('78 only) rear muffler, where fabrication was required took over 40 hours!

Yes, it's a serious growth market! I got in the business a couple years ahead of the things, which was for better and worse. Better because I was able to get set up for larger restorations. Worse because I'm the only shop focusing on early 928s and comprehensive restoration (I thought it was a 'plus' to forge tracks in a new niche, but I don't feel that way anymore... it's lonely at the bottom )
Best news is there's certainly opportunity! I welcome any intrepid entrepreneur into the game. The existing enthusiast community and budding collector market would also welcome additional support. And the early 928 would appreciate it too!

Sure, but this would require a post-mortem, probably not well suited for a public forum. Plus, I'm not dead yet, so... Also consider I'm an enthusiast here in RL, and I don't represent myself as the business (I posted an update in this thread as courtesy). Thanks for understanding.

With so much transition it's too soon to tell, but my inventory will be moving with. My priority will be setting up shop (quickly) and continuing on a large in-progress restoration. At some point there will be inventory liquidation, as I find time to scale things back.

Jim, best wishes to you and your family through this transition. You are a very valuable asset to us all. I am very to hear that you are staying in the fold.

Now, what am I going to do with all these OBs waiting to be restored?

Thanks Hoi. What to do? Start a 928 business. Your wife will appreciate some legitimacy to your craziness, and you get to write-off s*#t.

Hi Jim

Best of luck with the move and with the business. I thank you for your help, wisdom and insight. I also appreciate your insight into the business as well.

For 20 some years, I had a full time career and a side business working with a GM performance salvage yard. I am all too familiar with the challenges of the business. Managing growth is a serious concern. Laws of diminishing returns can truly take hold quickly

Sounds like the move will help you refocus and prioritize. I look forward to seeing where the road leads 928 Classics
