Default Odometer

Hey gang,

I repaired the odometer gear on my 87 S4 and it worked perfectly for about a month. Now it has stopped working again. Are there additional gears I should order & replace before I get back into it or is probably a piece from the old one jamming the gears? I was pretty sure I got all of the old pieces out. I don't want to open it and then have to wait on parts.

Same problem. Replaced the gear, worked for about a month. Stopped. Opened up again and fiddled with it (found nothing wrong) and it worked again for about 3 months. Got in last week and no joy. WTF?

Did mine last year and still working fine.

Do a search for Dwaynes write up. two critical issues are to ensure all the residue from the old gear is gone. My gear had turned to powder and if you don't get all that out it will cause the odo to sieze up again.

Second issue is some may have play between the individual digit wheels. I believe Dwaynes write up addresses a fix for that as well.

I'm actually having a couple of locals over tomorrow to replace odometer gears. Jim D. has done the job before and is coming over to advise. Wish us luck and hope it works for more than a month!

Be sure to sand the sides of the gear smooth, I used Dwaynes write up and was able to polish the little ridges out of my replacement gear.

We did 2 of the gear replacements this afternoon at Don's. Both went reasonably well. One went into an '86.5 and the other one into an '85. The gear was a bit too tall on the '85, it required a bit of effort to reduce the height of the gear on the shaft by about .016". With the e ring on and the gear full height it would lock up the drive. After a couple of minutes of file work to remove the .016" the gear worked smoothly. Please note, the height on the post was the issue, nothing wrong with the gear (from 928'2rus, Thanks Roger!) but it is fairly clear that whoever built the speedos for Porsche did not have a finite quality control year to year. I have been involved in 5 gear replacements IIRC, and a bit of adjustment has been needed on 3 of the 5.....nothing to fear, just helps to proceed with care and be prepared to make minor adjustments as necessary.
