Home Made lift
Here's a few pictures of my home made lift I use a demag 10 tonne overhead to lift the car or just about any thing else I want to. It's minus 22 Deg C here to day I use my forklift to move the lift outside when not in use so I went outside to take a couple of pictures If you want more pictures PM me.

That's not what this is about. I had a couple of welders standing around making puppies a few X-mas s ago so I got them to make me a X-mas present since I was paying them any ways and could't sell the puppies.

Damn, those pics are not fun to look at. I try to not even look out the window because I hate snow so bad. We are snow covered and about 10 F right now. Thanks for posting the pics.

Come on Jeff building your own lift is about as practical as racing or boating.

Rob ... I think that work horse is the way to go. Looks like it won't take up much room, portable, doesn't need to be bolted into floor, and easy to use.
I am also looking for a solution at the moment, need to spend some cash before the end of the year for my Imagestar business. I hate giving 30% to the Government!! I use a forklift sometimes like the one you nave and is not exactly safe!!!!

RGS,
IF you decide on the Best Buy lift, I'd certainly recommend the extra $74 for a 9K lift instead of a 7K lift.
My asymmetric 2 post lift is 10K, and I don't know how I got along without it!

I am sure leaning towards the 9000lbs if I go that route. I just worry about the build qaulity with a lift so inexpensive. If I can get the used 2 post from a local commercial shop I think I will go with that. If they are using it to make money you would think is has to be built pretty good.

Victor, I like the workhorse but I am working with about a $1500 budget whether I build something, go cheap new, or pro grade used. In the end most likely a used two post pro-grade that is still servicable. I just do not know why the Best Buy lifts are that much cheaper than others, I know you usually get what you pay for.

Good old cheap Chinese steal and labor is why!!
I have had all these same thoughts multiple times over the years. I finally came to the ssame conclusion as so many DIY things. How many hours will it take to design and build one and at what costs??? Now how much money can we make if you put that same amount of focus and time into own business... It always seams to be the same answer... so I will just buy a new one, unless I find a really good deal on a used one. But if you come up with a really cool DIY unit that I don't have to bolt to the floor, let me know.

I got bit by the lift bug a few years ago at SEMA. So I started looking for a portable lift. There was one built by Bend Pac, but it was more like a battery powered fork lift. Then because of the battery/ toxic waste issue they guit making them. Took another couple of years to find the Workhorse.
You guys are youngmen, and the lift will last you many years, look at it as an investment. Over the next 20 years, it's not much money, and you're body will thank you.
