Default What have I broken - Hatch motor not cycling

-90 S4.

I adjusted my hatch motor so that it would open the hatch. It was cycling (pull briefly on the switch and the motor would perform a full cycle) prior to the adjustment. Now it is only working (turning) while you pull on the switch. As soon as you let the switch go it stops.

I did a search and read about a 1A fuse that might be the culprit but could not find where this would be located. It might also not be the problem so I am looking for input as to its location and other things that might be causing this.

Thanks,
Myles

Its the only 1A fuse on the CE panel - Fuse 26 for your year - it is most likely just this fuse

Thanks for the encouragement Randy.

Fortunately in my small town of less than 4000 people there was one in stock.

I might add some to my next order though Roger.

BTW the fuse fixed the problem.

Thanks

Myles

Having this problem on our 84 manual. Hatch motor does not cycle.

Roger suggested fuses 24 (motor) and 26 (ensure cycle) are involved. I pulled 24 and hatch release motor still runs when I pull switch.

No mention of hatch release on fuse diagram page of owners manual.

Any other fuse suggestions?

Sorry Tim I had 85 in my head not 84.
IIRC you only have one fuse for tailgate #23

You have an inline fuse near the release motor at the back - go digging

Did dig.
Did find.
Small glass fuse with a spring inside it is located within a black, submarine-shaped connector. Removed fuse and noted that motor does indeed not cycle. Inspected fuse, which appears to be intact (spring is in one piece). Returned fuse to inline position and motor still does not cycle.

I had to clean the contact of the fuse/holder on the ends and it started to work for mine 3 years ago.

Did you test the fuse for continuity?

This exact problem with the hatchback failing just happened to my 89 car. Thank you guys for writing this thread! It was the 1 amp fuse. A new fuse fixed everything. I'm glad it was not the transistor.

Don't go by inspection or replacement - neither provides any guarantee - test with an ohmmeter - even a freshly installed fuse can be blown (immediately). Glass tube fuses can blow at the wire connection - hidden by the end caps...

This, a more thorough approach than visual analysis, turned up a dead fuse.

Thanks to the British for all of the help.

Roger, we need a 1A fuse.

I will clean the interior of the fuse connector as well.

Big thanks.
