Radio cut out in centre console
My original radio was replaced with a larger unit (see pics below with and without radio trim). I'm thinking about putting the original (79; small blau) back in. The opening for the radio was cut to fit the new radio. Is the piece that was cut to make room the the second radio permanently attached to the beige console, or is it separate? How difficult is it to replace whatever is needed to make the opening the original size? TIA

Well the original opening is called a single DIN in size. Looks like they did a little butcher job installing the one you have in there, unfortunately. Unless they left out some trim that came with it. All you can do it remove it and see what you have to deal with. Personally, why go back to the old Blau, you can get a better radio with the newer features, CD, Bluetooth, etc. I installed a JVC with touch screen in mine, even plays movies. It's a JVC KD AVX77. I was even able to put a Porsche emblem in the screen.

Bugger . I was planning to put in a more modern stereo, but because pretty much everything on this car is original I was thinking of putting it back. Guess I'll go with the upgrade instead. Bluetooth would be handy.

Actually the early radios were slightly smaller than a single DIN , there was some cutting and triming of the acknowledgement panel and the console trim needed to intstall a standardized single din unit.

I have found that if you delete the steel sleeve on the newer style radio inserts they usually slip right into the old style cutout. Atleast all the ones I have tried here fit no problem. I have been using mostly pioneer head units.

Is the aftermarket cut-out version you see pictured in my post the "newer" size or the "old" size? I.e., if I buy a new radio will it fit in the hole as is, or will I need to delete something from it to get it to fit?

I have been searching and searching for a modern replacement pre DIN radio unit for some of my early cars without success. The original uncut trim piece is unobtainium unless you find an unmolested used one.
I have bought a number of early used radio units - Bamber QTS mainly - but all usually have some fault or other issue.

I should have cleaned the radio before I took this picture, sorry. On emblem, with this JVC you can install a picture using the USB input on the radio. I thought kind of neat, almost looks original Porsche install. I copied some emblems, picked one I liked and put it in. I have since installed a sub woofer which fits in the spare tire, made one heck of a difference!! See my other write up's here and in Pelican site. When the radio is off, it looks all black, quite nice! Radio mounted in the normal fashion, no problems.

When I bought the JVC radio I think I paid about $649 but I believe the price has dropped. It has one CD player but you can Bluetooth or USB your songs right off your Iphone and also take phone calls. It comes with a mike. It also has video camera input and a digital radio accessory for about $100. It does play DVD movies!
