Purists who hate the chevy conversion.... this car is legit.

I've seen several on here try to do these conversions with a set cost. Not one has been completed on time or for anything close to the original cost models. If you want a chevy engine in your 928 without regards to cost then do it. If you are trying to hit a certain level of performance for X amount then look at the boost options and get your 928 running as it should before you start down any of those roads.
So if you can budget for 8K, but you can afford twice that if things get out of hand, then do it.

quick ??? Where do you live and what are the smog laws there? that is HUGE if you live where the smog ****'s run the show....
While you can make more power from a chebby LS engine for less money, typically about 1/2... and the full aluminum engine is lighter by about 100lbs... The cost of the conversion is pricey.....not to mention it will have lots of little issues that need to be resolved
I built a corvette LS2 to install in my racer......520+hp for not very much $$$$......currently I have the LS2 for sale, since it honestly is too much motor for me right now and will cause lots of problems with broken transmissions (wide slicks don't help)

wow, I started quite a conversation. I spoke to the guys at renegade again today. the basic kit is 1400 bucks. With all the parts available it is still under 4k..way under. I am a Ford guy, and have built a few very powerful (600+ rwhp) mod motors. if I could put a ford into a 928 i would in a heart beat. I cant though.... well not if I want it to work with the porsche tranny anyway. Sooo... the Chevy 350 is the only choice.
someone mentioned I could get an s4 and supercharge it. That would be sweet, and nothing is wrong with that, but the cost per HP comparison between Porsche and Chevy is like night and day.
For instance, cams for the 928 are 1500 bucks for a 16 valve. for a chevy v8 they are 400 bucks for any grind you want. Most parts are along the same lines of comparison.
if I had infinite money, I would without a doubt go 100% Porsche. Other than the soul possessing whine of the Ferrari or Lambo motors, there is no better sound than a Porsche engine (IMO). Since I dont, to get that kind of power, I would have to go chevy. Anyone with some patience and a mechanical mind can build a chevy 350 motor. Obviously, to build a good one takes some experience.
I am fully confident that a 500+ hp 350 can be built without any boost for under 5K. that is for a fully forged motor that has been blue printed, balanced and using stage 3 heads and cams.
Like I have mentioned before, I LOVE the 928 style, and have always wanted one. to be able to have a 500 hp 928 for a total of 10k would be amazing. Now I know there are a lot of purists on this forum, and I totally respect that.
The "project" car I bought is basically a POS, and needs electrical work and doesnt run exactly right now. if I cant get it to run soon, I may just decide to tear it out

As long as you don't ruin good 928 with a good motor you might as well. Better than crushing it I guess. But no one seems to want these conversions when they are for sale so that should tell you something.

Not sure if this is a renegade kit, but if it is, you get the kit and a car and motor to go with it for $1000.

If you want a more powerful 928, you've picked the wrong starting point.
Ditch it before you take it apart and it becomes (more) worthless, and buy a faster 928 to work from.
Good candidates are "Euro" 928S from 80-85, or USA 85/86, or S4 onwards.
Factor in the cost of interior/exterior refurb as well as your engine replacement and you're looking at many $$ (hint: the engine swap is pretty cheap).
If you're sure you want a 928, start the (long) process of finding a good 'un to work with - which usually means as good paint/interior as you can find in your budget.

I think your old adage isn't valid anymore Jim - inflation and age these days makes it more like $15k than 10.

I spoke to the guys at renegade today, and they have basically talked me into it. I am going to try to get the motor in it running and drive it around for a little while as I start to acquire 350 motor parts. I am going to use the new edelbrock e street Fi system. It is bad *** an comes with a blue tooth in cockpit programming system. The 350 with this system will produce well over 450 hp.
I am wondering however, how are the braking systems and suspension set ups on the 1980 cars? Other than the body, these will be the only two major systems that will remain in the car.
in the mean time though, I am going to do whatever I can to make this thing run again. I probably wont do the conversion for about 6 months. I would very much like to enjoy the car with its porsche motor in it for a little bit before it comes out.

How exactly are you planning on pulling 450hp out of an non boosted 350? I don't think there is enough displacement or rpms to pull that off. You can always do what I did and build your own supercharger set up for only $1000. Click on the grey in my signature.

I hope the it goes well and keep us updated. I have nothing against Renegades if they are done right. I would love to have a LS1 in a 944. As far as HP I know that when people start talking HP around here you need to specify whether it is crank or wheel. Not clarifying always creates confusion. When you say over 450 I am thinking you are referring to the HP before driveline loss.

1st, Welcome to Rennlist and good luck with your new to you project. 2nd, please keep it close to the vest for a bit and listen. You have started 3 threads in the last 12 hours or so, and have chimed into another thread unrelated to you. The RL's you are tapping into are here to help you with your project and cumulatively have a s_ _ _ _load of experience with 928's. re: James Bailey, Disnsdale, Stan, Rob Edwards, Lizard, Iceman, Hilton, Bronto, Sean R, Im0ooo, xchop, etc, etc. These guys can work on a 928 in the dark and would do just fine. You sir cannot and neither can I. These RL's have heard your story many times over the years, and are still hear to help you. Please be patient, let the search box be your friend and good luck on your journey. 77tony
