Default any idea why my windshield has clear "tint" on inside?

The entire inside of my windshield is covered in a clear material that is similar I guess to what would be used to tint car windows...

very weird. Why would someone do that?

Over the years there have been a few UV protecting films sold. Some worked OK, some not so much. Some were factory I think.
Also some safety films to keep glass shards from flying.

Could be one of those.

3M supposedly has a new UV film that works very well, but expensive. I've seen it on a few car forums lately.

You happen to know the product name? Might want to look into that for my car. I've heard it's fantastic.

Andy K put it on his S4 and the car I've got here now also had it done. Fantastic stuff. I'll be doing it whenever I put in a new windshield.

I'm sure if you didn't want "tint" on the rest of the car you can have it done all the way around.

Its the 3M 5% Crystalline.

VegasGnome and I had it applied on new glass in LA, and then we had them installed at Sharktoberfest this year.

A 3M tint shop will have it.

Its easiest with the glass out, because the tint is thicker than normal tint, and the edges are hard to get to..so you will "see" it at the margins from the outside..if that matters...just a little.

Yuk. Might have to live with that though, the benefits seem to outweigh the ugly. I'm in no mood to take all the glass out

Thanks for the info, gonna shop around and see what I find.

This is on your Euro, right? The Euros of that era came with a Sekuraflex windsheild, which had this plastic film laminate on the inside. My Euro had this (since replaced with a "regular" windsheild), and it is easy to damage when you use a blade to remove inspection/registration stickers. It was to prevent glass shattering. US windsheilds have the plastic laminated in between 2 sheets of glass. At least you know it is original.

As noted by others, its factory. Be very careful not to scratch it, or stick things to it - otherwise you'll end up replacing the windscreen.

I tinted my windshield to help preserve the interior of my black 928. Has UV blockers and keeps car cooler when sitting outside.
