Worked great, looked really weird, didn't employ strap method. Time consuming deflation to say the least. Have the industrial AAA for when you "absolutely have to get it there overnight". G

According to what I've read about wheels only Porsche uses our lug pattern.

Yeah I was thinking of the tire itself. I don't know if there is some "standard" sizes for these collapsible things or not, or what it takes to mount a new one on a wheel though.

How do VW folks put Porsche wheels on their cars?

I never ran this to ground, but thought it might have potential.

"What is more, this added value spare tyre offers you a volume saving of some 60 percent in comparison with conventional spare tyres."

VW/Audi PCD is different, but they're also designed for a lower negative offset.

Fitting Porsche wheels to a VW involves bolt-on spacers which provide new holes with the Porsche (5/130) PCD, and high-offset wheels (like 928 ones) - for a final result which is reasonably close to stock VW/Audi offset.

30% of new cars today do not come with spare tires, and I understand this is increasing.

with GTS front brakes , my spare only fits the rear . If I get a flat on the front its SOL . But the impact issue keeps it in the car .

Speaking as an owner of the same '87 S4 for almost 26 years, I had one flat tire when the car was almost new (maybe a year old). The spare and the compressor worked OK. Subsequently, over the years, the spare turned into a piece of crap. The ID of the spare collapsed into the rim and, hence, the tire would not inflate. Tried to inflate it using a strap around the OD but could not get enough seal on the ID to make it work. Spare is sitting in the corner of my garage and I have three cans of fix-a-flat in the car. Have never had a flat since that very first one. Anybody need a non-functional spare?

My spare is a bit worn. Anyone ever put new rubber on or is it a throw away wheel?

The spare wheel for my '89 is part no. 928 362 030 02. Cost is around $400 new. PET description for the part says "emergency wheel 5 1/2 J x 15 with collapsible tire"

Anyone know for sure if it actually comes with a new tire on it?

Before I would let my teenage son get his drivers license he had to show me a tire change, oil change, jump start (safely) and how to check all the fluids, identify fuses, etc.

Funny thing is that he told one of his buddies this was going to happen at our house on a Saturday so he asks me if a couple of his friends can come since they don't know this stuff either.

Saturday morning comes around and I have 5 kids AND 4 DADS standing there wanting to see all of this happen. The dad's were asking more questions than the kids...... kind of sad.

Even if it did would you drive on it? The rubber is still likely to be 20+ years old. Maybe I'm paranoid but I'd be very afraid to drive on a tire that old but maybe I'm wrong on that?

That is awesome. I was planning on doing a similar thing with my daughter who has her permit now. Perhaps I will ask her if any of her friends want to stop by too.

We did a similar thing with my kid's horse back riding club on horse trailer safety, was glad to see it was taken seriously by the kids and parents.
