Correct fuel pump operation?

On the early cars the pump(s) run for pressurization blip on ignition on (a second or so) other than that they only run when the engine is rotating so if the starter fails or the engine stalls the pump(s) stop. When there are two pumps they are directly connected together so they always do the same thing...

I own an 89 S4 w/95k miles. Sean is replacing my external fuel pump, internal fuel filter and hose this weekend because, as he wrote; "my current one is making a high pitched noise ... screaming for help ... and yelling at me to change it". I got all the parts from Roger at 928s R Us for less than $300 with a one day turn around. You just can't beat Rogers' service.
At 3rd Coast, I saw a guy who lost his fuel pump. It wasn't pretty. He had to limp back to the hotel. I don't want to be that guy. Sorry Brent!
