what did that little strap hold down? mine is broken and missing except the bracket that screws it to the body....

If you are referring to the rubber one to the right of the hatch lock it holds the jack bag & contents in place. YMMV.
(looks like I am wrong)

It holds the warning triangle in place on cars which have it (european and various other countries, as well as tourist-delivery cars).
