2. It's coming from the very front, more in the front flex plate area ( But I realize that the apparent location can be deceptive)
3. I only hear it at stop or going very slow at idle.
4. Porken lift bars are worth their weight in gold.

I'll post on a new thread if it gets interesting..

The way I determined it was my Torque tube was to remove the inspection cover, then disconnect the 6 bolts holding the clamp to the flexplate. Then remove the pinch bolt and slide the clamp back far enough to give you a few CM clearance between the assembly and the rotating flex plate. Start the car and listen if the sound goes away its likely the torque tube.

The torque tube acts like a megaphone and will project its sound (and the sound will bounce around) make it extremely difficult to pin down the source.

Best of luck,

Hugh

1-20-12 update

TT was rebuilt using the bearings supplied by MY good friends here on RL weeks ago. Waited on some seals for the trans to get here and resealed what I could yesterday.

Did the MM and pan seal as I had these parts in my parts box for years now. NOTE TO SELF and thos that want to know....doing the MM with the drive train out is a mistake. Very difficult to get it all lined up as the motor wants to rotate with the TT out.

VERY close to pushing it back under the car! Want to make sure I don't miss something first.

Here is where I am. Will update as I complete. Hope to have it all done in 2 of 3 days.

Dean, did you find the removal of carrier with transmission (and TT) awkward?

Not at all. I thought everyone did it that way till I read the manual.

I would take the few minutes to replace the soft portion of the vacuum line to the modulator now while it's easy to get at. My local import shop was out of the fabric covered hose so I went with silicone.

Got any pictures of the bearings themselves? New next to old? Being inserted into tube? Etc.

I did not take pics of the bearings before I assembled the TT. Wish I had.
Those super bearings are just that. They are so wide there is NO WAY they could ever titl in the tube which I think is a weakness of the stock. Even a little tilt would put undue stress on the bearings at least in my mind.

Hope to have more this evening.

Good idea...will locate some before the assembly is raised into place.

Update 1-28

Well she is running! Had a heck of a time filling the trans fluid. Also changed diff oil. Got everything back together and the trans SLIPS in all forward gears. Talked to Sean and he suggested adjusting modulator pressure. I gave it 2 full turns clockwise...and it shifts a small tad hard now....but no slipping.

No rattling now too so thanks everyone for the much appresicated help!!!!

This last go around...I replaced the TT bearings, Torque convertor bearings, Trans pump seal, motor mounts and oil pan seal!

I think before I drive too much I will get a trans shop to check pressure as I have no idea if its too high now. The modulator does have a very slow vac leak so I will need to fix that but its down off jack stands!!!

Yep...I made sure before I continued my assembly. Thanks goodness as I do not want to do that again soon.

Any idea why I needed to adjust the pressure after a new pump seal??? Is that normal? I don't know what I could have done to get the pressure off so much. Other that testing for a vac leak...thats all I did to the modulator.
